More stations, fewer frequencies

This doesn't directly pertain to Nashville, but I am in Davidson county and can pick up the old 105.3 WOVO out of Glasgow and 105.3 out of McMinnville with a standard tuner (BG signal is slightly stronger). Today seek picked up 106.3 and apparently WOVO jumped up to that frequency. The signal was about the same strength as 105.3 so I'm assuming on 3kW for now. They have a construction permit for 50kW, and if/when they jump to it I'd assume OH, Hville, and Gallatin would get a decent, near-listenable signal, depending on nearby terrain.

Moral of the story, between 106.3 and soon to be 89.9 to be taken, there's minimal room left for clear part 15 broadcasting on the NE side of town :/

Also, I like Bowling Greens 107.1 and now 106.3 MUCH better than Mix 92.9. Fills in the AC void of Nashville.

Also, I just noticed 89.9 in Hville is listed as 102.5 translator for sports. Didn't I read something about WAY-FM owning and up-ing the height there? I pray that goes to Way and not 102.

I noticed seems nobody around Nashville likes mix 92.9......I listened to it last time I visited Nashville and was not very impressed. I will agree that WOVO 106.3 is better than mix 92.9.

J White - Wanna hear something really interesting? WJXA is THE highest rated FM radio station, numerically, in all of the Top 50 markets. #1 Nationally. Since we can only "report" the 6+ numbers legally on this board, Mix was well over 11 points. That was the AC music, mostly. It did include few days of Christmas music. The updated numbers come out later this week will show an even bigger increase. Honestly, the format is not generally the preferred format of most of the posters on this board. It's interesting to also note that Barbara Bridges was quoted as one, if not the, top source for how to properly program great Holiday music. Things are on a high note for South Central. Tops against two big corps. Mix scored much better at night with Doug live and local. That makes a huge difference. I haven't listed to WOVO, but will check it out. I see that they have Bob and Sheri on AM Drive. That will be popular with some on this board! While Mix isn't most men's cup of tea, it certainly has huge loyalty from the exact target audience -- women. The real numbers prove it is strong. Even the 18-34 has gone off the charts this year. The change to draw in younger listeners has worked. The 55+ is still strong, as is the 25-54. QQK is still huge. I still can't believe they didn't swap the 92.1 and 97.1 signals with Crums sold to EMF. And FWIW, Jack climbed to number two.

As for their new signal at 106.3 for WOVO, it looks like it will be a tough signal to penetrate much past Hendersonville, Old Hickory, etc. Look at WCVQ (Q 108) and it has all but disappeared from being listenable in areas where it was decent a few years ago. That's a 100kw signal with better tower height. WOVO will be 50kw with less than 500 feet to work with. 107.1 is also tough to listen to with 106.9 in Cookeville and 106.7 here messing with it.

I was not trying to say WOVO was trying to compete with Mix 92.9....I was just doing an comparison and my personal preference. I can listen to WOVO but can't stand Mix 92.9.

Ah man, I didn't intend for my post to be directed at or against you! My apologies. You certainly have every right to like WOVO and I am glad you mentioned it. I am looking forward to listening to it and checking out the differences, etc. My post was more just presenting the facts because most of it isn't easy to access. As far as the radio business goes, in 2012, it is pretty interesting that Mix is such a powerhouse radio station, and yet most people wouldn't have any idea that it is.

FWIW...WOVO was listenable on the drive in today along I-40...
much impoved from the signal on 106.3 just a few days ago.
Upgrade complete?

Here's going back 30 years for you. I remember applying for a position @ WOVO back in the early 80's maybe '83 or '84. I got a call from whomever, my memory can't recall the name, and he said "I'm going down the list and you the next one on it, the job pays $150 per week do you want it? I said try the next one on your list, no.

I can actually hear WCVQ and WUHU quite often all the way down here on the AL/TN line, with two 106.9s battling it out (Cookeville and Birmingham) , a 100kw semi-local 107.3, and a low power local 107.9, quite some impressive signals they have there.

I guess it's just being in the Nashville basin and clutter that cuts these signals out. I used to get WCVQ pretty well a few years ago, but it's tough now in South Nashville. I did get 106.3, with lots of noise, one night this week. It's amazing that you can pick Q 108 that far south.

Q 108 is almost always the first signal to show up in even weak DX openings in that direction, It also helps that I have an open field to my north and all other sides are surrounded by trees, tends to act as a natural reflector for my antenna
