More syndicated shows in HD in DFW

While staying up late last night, I noticed that some of the CSI repeats were being shows in HD on Channel 11.
More surprising: KDFI-27 had American Chopper (didn't know it was in syndication) in HD late last night. Looked great. I knew that KDFI had run My Network TV programming (and Rangers games) in HD, but I wasn't aware they were able to take a taped syndicated show and show it in HD. That's an upgrade for them and maybe a sign that their sister station Fox 4 will someday soon do HD news.

I think KDFW and the other fox O&Os are going wait until the switch in Feb when it comes to switching their newscast over to HD...

It costs money to receive and record shows in HD. This is one of the last pieces of the puzzle.

As far as local news in HD the big question local stations ask themselves is do we go HD with what we have-- i.e. HD studio cameras and HD graphics-- or wait until we're shooting in the field in HD and can do live shots in HD... or at least widescreen SD.

KDFI also delays movies that are run in HD on My Network TV when they're doing a Rangers or Stars game. One would assume they'll now be able to play them back in HD.

I would suggest HD local news and HD syndicated programming are two different issues, for the most part. The only hardware they have in common is the MCR switcher.

KDFW is already shooting in the field and studio with HD cameras. It's equipment that needs to be added at the station that's the roadblock. Not that many syndicated shows are available in HD yet. 27 should have Raymond and Desperate Housewives in HD soon.

Well, that was kind of my point. They didn't have the master control switcher set up to do local HD programming, now they do. It seems like a sign Fox 4 might be close to getting HD news. I know there are a TON of other things that have to be done, but the posting by Hal shows that they have at least gotten the cameras in place to make it happen. Now they have to get an HD switcher set up and video server (are they on a server yet?) upgrade to HD. I believe the last part of that is just a software upgrade, if in fact Fox 4 is doing their video on a server now. (I can't recall)

I just don't want people to underestimate the size of the job of upgrading a control room for HD local news. A HD MCR can be installed more or less as an island, as long as you have at least one HD source (probably network) to make it worthwhile. HD news requires upgrading of a LOT more equipment. Particularly, distribution amplifiers/monitors/D>A converters/wiring/graphics/etc./etc./etc...

All that said, the station I work for followed exactly this path: upgraded MCR to support HD, then immediately went to work on a HD news control room. But they were two different projects.

The MC switchers for both stations have been in place for a year. The production switcher for several years. Right now, it is just servers and software modifications. The tape to server switch was done about 2 years ago.

I don't why the complaints about KDFW.Their news is a combination of entertainment weekly,National Enquirer, and My Weekly reader. It is abysmal.

Weekly Reader at least checks its sources and doesnt send reporters out to bully people who protect their property...

Sorry, Mr. Murrow, if your sensibilities are offended.
