More WCAP Shenanigans

So, as 980 WCAP settles into their new digs at 61 Market Street this week, a prominent Lowell man with ties to WCAP's morning host was arrested for trying to rape a twenty-year old woman whilst attempting to break into Lowell High School

LOWELL — The founder of a Lowell drug treatment facility for women was ordered held without bail on a number of charges, including assault with intent to rape, during his arraignment Tuesday in Lowell District Court.

Timothy Grover, 55, of Dracut, was arraigned on the charges of assault with intent to rape, two counts of assault and battery, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of threat to commit a crime, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest stemming from an incident at Lowell High School late Monday afternoon.

Judge Tejal Mehta ordered Grover held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on Friday.

The state’s prosecutor detailed the events that led to the charges.

Assistant District Attorney Gregory Galizio said the “highly intoxicated” Grover entered Lowell High School around 4 p.m. Monday — the day before the start of the school year — where some students and teachers were working on projects.

Galizio then said Grover entered a classroom and threatened to sexually assault a 20-year-old woman. Shortly after, Galizio said Grover wandered into the school’s auditorium where he then assaulted an 18-year-old male student.

How is this relevant to WCAP? Well Ted Panos is close friends with the suspect in question and is Director of Communications and Outreach Development for the Megan House treatment facility that Grover founded.

Ted Panos went on air to mention in a really defensive manner that Grover was no longer involved with the Megan House and that anyone questioning WCAP's reputation for not reporting this on Tuesday will "get theirs."

Ted also threatened to quit on air and said that the haters and trolls should be careful of "collateral damage."

Nice station.

....man with ties to WCAP's morning host .

A radio station, especially a community-based station has ties to everyone in town.

Every, business, every politician, every department, every neighborhood.

Ted Panos is close friends with the suspect in question

It should be obvious that the "suspect in question" is having mental difficulties.

As a radio person who has met TONS of people...I hope My "close ties" with any of them would not hold me responsible for anything they did....especially if that person was having mental difficulties.

I am only responsible for my own actions...not anyone I am friends with, or have "ties" with...

1) Did you read the part where Ted was Outreach and Development Coordinator for the charity in question? A direct conflict with his on air position. Also the suspect in question is helping to finance the redevelopment of his new boutique hotel in Downtown Lowell.

2) The suspect was caught by police - by the Lowell Sun - threatening to rape a twenty-year old. In his own words. That's not having mental difficulties. That's just him being violent.

3) No. You're judged by the company you keep. Especially in a small city like Lowell with the only 5k watt commercial AM station licensed to the city. People have called him out on their Milltown Plumbing Text Line.

FWIW

Not that anyone here actually listens to WCAP (besides me), but they have Asa Stultz in studio again today. Ted is third mic as Asa (who is in Labor Local 1420 in Lowell) and producer Alex Lebowitz are talking mostly Pats.

Seems to me that Ted is making good on his promise to quit WCAP.

Yes, Radio stations are full of people with 'conflict". Attorney's on-air, MD's, Salespeople, politicians, charities, etc.

This is not a bombshell.

2) That's not having mental difficulties. That's just him being violent.

The news report said he appeared "intoxicated"....drugs, booze, or whatever, he was not in his right mind. Is he an alcoholic, drug addict, neurotic, psychotic? I hope I am not judged if one of my close friends has mental, drug, addiction or legal trouble.

3) No. You're judged by the company you keep.

I "keep company" and work with the homeless and addiction programs. I have had some of them to my house. Many have my phone number on speed-dial.

I hope I am not judged by the actions of homeless/addicts I might have dealings with.

I have addiction in my family.

If they went out and did something bad, is that a reflection on me?

Let's just hope the friends and family that you deal with aren't antisemitic

Teddy on the morning show today:

"I can't retire early. I don't have that Jewish money."

Sure the Colonel loved that.

There is no conflict in having "experts" such as lawyers, doctors, accountants and the like on the air. It's all about how the station presents and controls them.

When programming talk KTNQ in Los Angeles, I had all day Saturday and all of Sunday except for a sports block filled with one hour "expert" shows. We had two doctors, a psychologist, a priest, three lawyers (criminal, family and immigration), a career/education counselor, and a variety of others. Each did the show for free and was allowed one "business card" mention at the start and end of the show that included their phone number and area of specialization or practice. They were not allowed to tell callers "I can't answer that but you can call me..." They had to take a minimum number of calls on the air, and had to do regular aircheck sessions with me to stay within the format; they were required to read liners, drop the station name in at least 20 times in each hour, etc.

We had regular obligatory training sessions with either myself or Valerie Gellar.

At the time, KTNQ was unique in the US as a talk station with greater shares on weekends than during the week.

You're seriously going to do this?

Why not? You started out talking about some alleged conflict at the station quoting a news story.

Then you switched to some alleged comment you heard that had nothing to do with the incident in the OP.

But if your point is that this is not a well run station....then point taken.
