Morgan White with Gene Burns, Don Kent, & Dave Maynard guests

alert...Morgan White Jr will talk to Gene Burns just after the midnight hour tonight (Sat going into Sunday)
and tomorrow night from 10 pm to midnight he will have Don Kent and Dave Maynard on...WBZ.

Gene talked about kind of falling into talk radio, after there was a parking lot controversy in western NY
(long story...)..got hired by "CBS in Boston" (WEEI 590?), and praised Dan Griffin. Without giving call
letters he referred to the station that used to have Jerry W. and David B. ('RKO)...eventually in early 90s
did syndicated show out of NY
He has temp moved to afternoons on KGO after the tragic death of the beloved Pete Wilson.

--Could Gene come to Boston? Doubtful he says--he just signed a new three year contract in San Fran.

He mentioned the importance of local talk radio and condemned the FCC eased rules on ownership,
feeling it would produce lots of cheap-to-run nationally syndicated shows that lack the feel
and importance of LOCAL talk radio.

He agreed with fellow libertarian David Brudnoy on all but one subject: foreign policy. David felt
that war was sometimes necessary, but Gene felt it was necessary "only when we're attacked". He
said he was disappointed in Pres. Bush but does not feel he should be impeached; "it's just a waste of
time".

Kudos to Morgan White Jr. for having Gene Burns on tonight -Saturday.
Gene has not lost his fast ball and it is a great loss to Boston that he is not doing talk from Boston. As mentioned above Gene just signed a three year contract with KGO in San Francisco. Can't blame him. Why would he want to be in the same state that harbors the likes of Howie Carr, Michael Graham "Crackers" and Jay Severin [ don't call me James Severino].

Boston's golden age of talk radio has past.

However, back in 2000 Gene Burns came to Boston several times a month to do a daily talk show from the new WMEX 1260 and from his home in San Francisco. Unfortunately, Alex Langer blew it probably under the green back influence of Brad Bleit [Convicted Felon from Prides Crossing] who wanted his new trophy wife - Bonnie Bernstein - on instead to do a financial show. Well, we know that Brad Bleidt was stealing from everyone INCLUDING his own mother in an embezzling scheme which caused him to end up in MCI Walpole or the like.

But as to Gene Burns, we had him and let him slip away because of the total incompetence of the operators of that station.

As to Gene himself, he could not have been nicer to the staff who did everything in their power to offset the damage done by the likes of Langer and Bleidt. But all for not. Gene return to San Francisco and there he remains.

Today, all Boston talk radio listeners have are the vulgar, profane and pedestrian prattlings of the like of Carr, Crackers and Severin.

As Dapper O'Neil used to say. "Its enough to make you sick."

I can agree with you for once, gone are the days a host can speak well on one subject for 4 hours.
Now it is all about pandering to the lowest common denominator
Ted and Janet
Gene
Jerry
That was a lineup!!!!

Well, Howie can be entertaining and I don't really consider it vulgar (though maybe the "unnh unnh"
sound effect he uses when he describes someone who's gay is a bit much). But yes Boston talk radio
was better back in the day with Gene, Jerry, Bruds, et al. Morgan thanked Gene for calling in during
Sullivan's farewell show.

Gene said he loves Boston esp. in the autumn (people say "fall" usually; Gene says "autumn" which
is a more picturesque word--cue the Kinks' "It's all part of my autumn almanac") and will do some kind
of restaurant-related appearance in late Sept. up in Ogunquit.

WMEX was 1060 (I, too, have been known to make typos and inaccuracies--apologies again for
referring to WAZN as being on 1360! I should have remembered it was 1470)...agreed on Langer's
attempt to make WMEX an interesting local talk station and what happened when "Bonnie and Brad"
got involved.

I'm not sure if Severin is vulgar (though some would object to his descriptions of a former First Lady
currently running for President) but he has been less than honest about certain things (fake Pulitzer
etc.) and seems a bit pompous at times; still, has been known to get ratings.
During the discussion btw it was said by Gene that he felt "right-wing radio is on the way out" and
implied part of it could be what happens in the next election where presumably "the other side will
get into power" (in the White House). I'm not so sure about that. Didn't right wing radio thrive
in the years when the husband of "her Highness", as Hannity calls her, was in office?

Please! Howie is at least pedestrian and classless. Tired of his repetitious topic and his predictability which is the same for "Crackers" and Severin. Severin is more the Vulgarian than the rest.

Let us hope that Gene Burns prediction is correct and that we are hearing the last of unbalanced - neither 'fair or balanced ' vomitus talk radio whether the Democrats take over the White House from the Republicrats or not.

Carr, Crackers and Severin....Tired - Old and BORING.

But I like Howie. So do many other listeners, or he'd be in Bug Tussle, Arkansas at a 100 watt daytimer.
Though yes, many feel it's the downfall of talk radio comp. to the old days.

Severin just seems a bit pompous and I don't like his voice.
We'll see if talk radio can rebound--and some local hosts in various places aren't bad. That's the key,
good local hosts. Some national is fine, but the "turn on the comp./sat. dish" to save $$ can be bad...

I'd say Jay's use of the term "w**back" is pretty vulgar... Also, what a pleasure to hear a classy host last night w/Morgan. Morgan is classy too and I wish they'd give him the overnight and move Steve LaVeille to 8-12. Or vice versa...

Yes, Morgan White, Jr. has paid his dues and I hope that WBZ radio will recognize that. One of the nice guys in the business too.

Very true...tune in tonight to hear Morgan Evan White Jr. with Don Kent and Dave Maynard, 10pm-mid...

I first started to listen to The Man From T.R.I.V.I.A. in the mid 80s on WMRE and then WKOX, and started going to his trivia
shows. Around 1987 I met Frank Ochieng, movie and TV reviewer who was also a fan of Morgan's
shows. Starting about 1989, I would have Frank on my blues show on WMWM talking movies/TV
(a change of pace) and eventually thanks to Morgan (and perhaps a little "on air training" from me),
Frank wound up doing what is now regular appearances with Jordan Rich (Morgan had Frank on
when he was filling in for Sully one night, and Jordan was impressed).

Anyway, agreed on Morgan.

(and my friend:
http://www.moviefrank.com ...I run his site)

Not a Carr fan and I don't listen much but I agree with:
Severin just seems a bit pompous and I don't like his voice
The voice and on-air persona is a turn off, but it's more than that. This guy reminds me of Roger Stone. And if you have been following whats going on with him in NYC--and most of his adult life-- that's not a compliment. I see Serverin in a similar light. Howie is a wiseguy but Jay is a creep.

Hmm...well, Jay's wikipedia entry says he worked as a political consultant for Geo HW Bush and
Pat Buchanan. Not sure if dirty tricks were employed by him in that capacity...
