A handful of urban outlets have took a chance with a female dj leading the AM drive shows for a couple years now. In Dallas, KKDA "K-104" has Dedee McGuire (she also is the sidekick for Doug Banks in the PM drive) and in Philadelphia WPHI "Hot 107.9" has Shamara and Laiya. Though a smaller market, Baton Rouge station WEMX "Max 94.1" had Latangela in the mornings until months ago when Rickey Smiley replaced her.

San Francisco's KISQ (98.1 KISS FM) has Renel and Christy in the morning.

Big difference...Renel had been part of a morning show for years before anchoring one on her own. That's not the case at KMEL. Renel also voice tracks during baseball season, and CJ holds things together, since Renel is up late announcing the home Giants games.

Yes - and Renel has been leading the morning-drive show on KISQ for most of the station's existence (15+ years), except for the short period the station tried (and failed) with the syndicated Tom Joyner show. What she did before that as a "sidekick" is ancient history.
