Morning Drive Lexington Radio in 1987

That article is wrong: WLAP-FM did play Motley Crue. A lot.

This is confirmed by one of the airchecks on that same site.

Was that the same Gary Green that was with Metro Networks?

Yes, it is the same Gary. Jack is still doing mornings but without the music. Kruser is doing talk at WVLK. Kelli is at KLOS LA. Indy Jonze became Matt Austin at K-93 and today he's GM at WAY-FM. No idea what happened to the Breakfast Flakes, though Frank's best line ever was "It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a pool table". Eric Stevens rode WLAP into the sunset and was doing sales for Clear Channel.

WLAP-FM was a very dayparted CHR. They didn't play Motley Crue in morning drive though evenings were a different story.

Thanks for posting that! I did overnights for Indy during that time and I can still run that board in my sleep! God, I was a know-it-all punk then! I'm old now....so that would make Indy.....WOW! And Michael Lee did mid-day's.....he's older than me too! HA! I'm still a punk!

Oh YEA we played Motley Crue! Barry Fox was the PD then & we were VERY dayparted. The station sounded pretty adult CHR til the sun went down - then we kind of shifted to a Mainstream CHR with a little dance sprinkled in. Crue - Def Leppard - anything that crossed over, he took a chance on. Dang I'm Old! I remember he had me do call-ins as I came to Lexington to do nights - gave me directions - told me to get on New Circle rd 'til it dead ended!

Johnny Walker - WLAP-FM Nights '88-'90

I'm amazed at who is still in Lexington 22 years later, and if you add 22 to the numbers cited in the story... whoa momma! Do you think these guys will be replaced with real people when they decide to retire?

Hey Karenrite!!

Have any idea where Michael Lee is these days? All of the stations he programmed sounded great.

There are several stations missing, most notably K-93. It might have been Karl Shannon. He had taken over the morning show around that time.

96.9 back then was on 96.7 and used "Format 41". I don't remember if they had a morning show in '87, they did a year later. This guy closed his show with "Don't Worry, Be Happy" every day.

101.5 was 101.7 and a smaller signal doing AC. The owner's son George Robbins did a solid morning show.

On AM, 1300 is missing. They were oldies and had a live morning show where Bill Kelly did several stints.

Morning guy on then WCOZ-96.7 in 1987 was Keith Raines; later it was Chuck Henson. Morning man on WLXG-1300 was Don Edwards; Bill Kelly did a live 3-6 p.m. shift then. And on WRKA down the road in St. Mathews, morning guy was Glen Beck........yeah, that one.

I forgot about Keith. He and Bill would leave LM and return on a regular basis in the late 80's and early 90's. Henson might have been the one with the "Don't Worry..." habit.

I thought Karl Shannon was still with WAMZ in Louisville at that time. He split his time between there and WHAS at one time.

Karl Shannon and Tad Murray arrived at the same time. Karl replaced Lee Sherwood while Tad did afternoons and was PD. They both arrived around late 86 or early 87. Tad came directly from WAMZ. Karl might have been working for WAVG before K93.

Always enjoyed listening to them when they were here in Louisville. Interestingly, they were in Louisville at the same time as Bill Cody too.
