Morning News at 4:30 a.m.?

Same with Seattle. KOMO, KING, KIRO and KCPQ all start morning news at 4:30AM weekdays.

When do the networks "open up" in the morning with their half-hour 'casts
preceding the glut of local yakfests which precede the nets' 7-9 AM yakkers?

I ask since there seems to be a push to opening up 4 AM to local shows.

Focusing on the Eastern zone, is anything (not the overnight stuff) fed earlier
than 4 AM now? Will those affils have to give up the early network newscast
in order to start a local 'cast at 4 AM?

And also of out of curiosity, are these half-hour netcasts updated on an
alternate sat channel for other time zones as the early AM progresses?

"America This Morning" is usually live at 4:00 a.m. and "Early Today" and "The CBS Morning News" are usually live at 4:30 a.m. According to the World Wide Web site CBS Press Express, CBS would update "The CBS Morning News" at 5:30 a.m., 6:00 a.m., and 6:30 a.m.

In regards to the early morning news programs, I don't think that stations will be giving those up altogether to air a 4 a.m. newscast. The fact that the programs are originally broadcast at 4 or 4:30 a.m. on the East Coast, will most likely make it harder for ABC, NBC and CBS stations in the Eastern Time Zone to air local newscasts in the 4 a.m. slot. The East Coast scheduling, however, does allow for leeway to schedule the early morning news shows earlier in the other time zones, because of time differences. For example, here in Oklahoma City (which is in the Central Time Zone), KWTV pushed the CBS Morning News to 3:30 a.m. (effectively cutting Up to the Minute to only a 85-minute block) when it decided to extend its morning newscast to 4 a.m. in 2011.
 
I don't remember anyone commenting on Chicago starting their local newscasts at 4:30am. WMAQ-TV (NBC) started their 4:30am newscast I believe in 2008, becoming the first station to do so. Then either WLS-TV (ABC) or WGN-TV (CW) was next. Now, all 5 stations: WBBM-TV (CBS), WMAQ-TV (NBC), WLS-TV (ABC), WGN-TV (CW), & WFLD (Fox) have a 4:30am newscast. WGN-TV now starts their news at 4am, & I forgot when they started this. So far, no one else has started their local news at 4am.
 
For the network early newscasts. I notice some say near the bottom of the 4AM hour, they announce what is coming up and end by saying, for some of you, we'll see you after these messages. Referring to the stations that have a 4:30AM Newscast.
 
Some stations do go on earlier for weather coverage. When Seattle had a "snowpocalypse" earlier this year, KIRO 7 went on 30 minutes early, and was live with limited commercial interruption until 7PM!

I bet stations in North Dakota, like KXMB, probably get a few minutes, max, of an event that would shut down Seattle... ;D

The 2010 "Snowpoclypse" in the DC market is the last straw that pushed all four DC stations to 4:30 AM starts en masse. It didn't, however, do the same in Baltimore.

The last paragraph of the linked article was updated due to a final change in the regular programming schedule for WALA-TV prior to today.
 
There has been what I call "middle of the night news" for years. That early in the morning (or late at night as some prefer) has typically been the love fest chatter to each other for the "main stream" media.
 
So much of this depends on the market, and the competition. In Seattle, for example, commutes are long and a 4:30 start on all network affiliates make sense. Probably the same in L.A., and the Bay Area.

What I can't take is watching any of these programs more than 20 minutes, which they were not meant to be. The same information, just repeated over and over, with different time checks and perhaps a different temp. Why not put together a quality early morning newscast and just repeat it, with graphic time and temp updates. Would seem to be more efficient.

In Denver, both KMGH 7 (ABC) & KUSA 9 (NBC) start at 4:30 AM while the others (Including Tribune-owned CW affiliate KWGN 2) all start at 5:00 AM

OTFS - KWGN 2, KTVD 20 (Who picks up where KUSA 9 leaves off at 7:00 AM) & KDVR 31 all end their newscasts at 9:00 AM

I mentioned nearly a year ago that all stations, except WGN-TV doing a 4:30am newscast in Chicago (WBBM-TV - CBS, WMAQ-TV - NBC, WLS-TV - ABC, & WFLD - Fox), while WGN-TV starts theirs at 4am. Since WGN-TV lost the rights to Live with Kelly & Michael to WLS-TV this fall, WGN-TV is expanding their morning news to go until 10am. Now that's overkill. I don't know if they simply didn't want to find something else to air in the 9am timeslot, but WLS-TV wanted Live with Kelly & Michael, because that show was a threat to Windy City Live at 9am. So with Live moving to WLS-TV in September at 9am (Windy City Live moves to 11am, with a slight change in format), WGN-TV decides to add a sixth hour of news.

Meanwhile on Guam KUAM 8 & 11 (NBC & CBS respectively) start their hourlong simulcast of news at 6:00 AM followed by network shows at 7:00 AM. No idea as to when KTGM 7 (Digital 14 - ABC) begins their news (No schedule on their website)

Not surprising for Guam.....

You mean there are ACTUALLY stations that still sign off IN THIS DAY & AGE ?? *Gawk!*
