Someone asked me when I'll be posting on radio-info? Well, now! Hi! :)

I've got 2 topics to cover - Morning radio and part timers...

Ok, let's get to it!

Morning radio. This is my opinion. When I did AM radio, I was getting up at 4, coffee, then being at the station by 5, shift at 6, done at 10, then you're there until 1 ish...Commercials, etc...Fine. I was Solo. Small Market Binghamton. I never had a partner. I had frequent guests and the station owner had zero problems putting them on the air...Very casual owner (Thank God!) I actually put on business people or people who owned small businesses. I was known for this...

Ok, 'nuff 'bout me...

Albany AM Radio. It's getting interesting! But...IMO, these days you need 2 DJs if not more! Listeners want banter! They want the mixturre talk and tunes. I primarily will listen to a station where there's a team! Again, I like the banner, bitching, etc...That's great radio! I do understand if a station cannot afford it. But please don't expect great ratings...Not gonna happen!

It's tough for me personally because I enjoy listening to several DJs on the AM drive. In no order:

1) Brian and Chrissy (Flly 92)
2) Bill and Suzy (B95)
3) Tejay Schwartz (personal friend, Magic 1017, Binghamton)
4) Wolf (Rock 100.9)
5) Randy and Kevin (The River 99.5)
6 Scott and Todd (WPLJ, New York City!)

See my dilemma??? Damn!

Ok...Part timers...Some DJs don't belong on the air...I need to be a consultant!

I enjoy:
Asher Kent - Fly
Joe Condon - B95
Crista Lee - B95
Danny Gates - Fly and B
I do enjoy Froggy 1071!
Love the River

Some names I can't recall...Some I'd rather not. Sorry!

But I do understand the dilemma of morning DJ's. I also enjoy Scott and Todd, and Mike and Mike, and Brian and Chrissy.
 
I failed to mention Jake and Dana from 1049 The Cat, very entertaining! My bad.

I heard Crista's airshift on B last weekend. The first hour for her was rough, but after that I thought she did well.

JakeBlues, it this personal with you and her?

I've been out of radio for a while myself, but once I got back on I sounded like crap until I was comfy. We All deserve a shot!

As far as Crista goes...if she is that bad why doesn't anyone work with her. Where are the days of aircheck reviews?. I also think calling her the "B" word is unfair.

I've had the pleasure of working with Crista quite a bit over the past few years-- and she is everything BUT that colorful word Jake chose to use.

Crista is an incredibly nice and hilarious person, who is a true friend. I've known her since her EQX days, and she's always working hard, helps the people she works with, and definitely does not sound terrible on the air. Always been wonderful to work with her.

My morning show picks:
1. Brian and Chrissy. Community-oriented, engaging, entertaining. I get sad when their show ends.
2. Wolf. Has he ever run his own board before Monday? Give him a bit, he'll do fine. I also think he needs a sidekick.
3. Chuck and Kelly (minus Kelly) on GY. Can't we just get Chuck solo?

I despise rap music, but I do not think anyone gives J-Will (son of Sugar Bear) enough credit for his AM WAJZ show. That kid spreads so much positive message through communities that really need it. Take a listen sometime (but turn off the volume during the music).
 
Every morning show needs a partner. $$ Should not be an object. Hire a hourly part timer, an intern...But make a 2 person show.

I like J Will, but I don't listen to Jamz...Sorry.
 
yeah, all sidekicks are eager to do most of the work at ungodly hours alongside some ridiculously overpaid blowhard for minimum wage. Genius programming idea.
 
That's actually more true than not. You get some twenty-something straight out of the new school that can't wait to get his/her voice on the air and they are willing to work for pennies at all hours of the day and night. The only bonus is a live or voicetracked weekend shift which is usually given to them just to shut them up and keep them happy. They get cheap labor and an extra body in the studio or someone to help out on the morning show and laugh at jokes. That's part of why you have so many horrible voices on the air.

Now, when you're done editing that bit, go to Xtramart and grab me a pack of smokes.

as someone who came from the New School within the last 6 or 7 years, that is so painfully true.....
 
As much as I cringed at every station leaping on the 'Let's stick any group of zanies together for a morning zoo' concept, Jake's observations about the wisdom of more than just one voice go back at least sixty years. And there's a lot of wisdom in that approach.

The best example I can propose -- as Jake allows himself for personal taste -- is Gene Klavan.

Back decades at WNEW 1130, Dee Finch was the straight man and Gene Klavan the anarchist/cut-up. But when Finch retired, Klavan elected to try and do both parts -- and succeeded.
Klavan (who probably is the funniest radio person I will ever hear) evidently saw the appeal of a multi-voice morning show very, very long ago.

How is he doing since his return from South Florida at Y-100 afternoons and Coast's Mornings?

I love Donny, both professionally and personally. It was a mistake not mentioning him, my bad. His show is a "Work in progress:"...He needs a sidekick. Period. Music is great, he's great. I would lose the PopCrush, I would lose the 15 and 45 news...
 
The real reason Donny left Florida? The real reason? I'm not Donny...I don't know. His family is here. I supposed it's a few things...Ask him. I would also suppose they will give him a year to see how the ratings are.
 
I don't know him personally, but he was at Clear Channel on Y-100 for afternoons. They did some cuts and went more voice-tracked with Michael Yo taking his daypart from California. Michael Yo used to have his program local here on Y-100 before he relocated and became part of the E-network in a different daypart.

He then went to Cox's WFLC, 97.3 the Coast on Middays, eventually joining Julie Guy in the mornings replacing her former co-host, Tamara G who was let go during a reorganization. After less than a year, Donny was let go as well. The ratings for the morning show still are low, but I do not think Donny was the problem. He had good interaction with the phone callers, and I thought that there was good chemistry, but I also believe there was some issue between Donny and Julie. Most stations here in SFLA are now voicetracked with national hosts, so there isn't much opportunity for a local show.

I hope he is doing well in Albany

I see Donny once in a while and he and his family are very well. I don't know if I see him at Crush for long...I do see him back on Fly eventually, but that's my opinion. Gut feeling.
 
A return to FLY???? I wonder...Do a google search for Donnie Michaels WFLY Elliot Spitzer...What comes up is to say the least...interesting....Particularly The Miami New Times article...
