Morning Scan

Morning Scan: WBFO, WJYE, 97 Rock, the Edge and the Lake:

While station hopping this morning, I began my listening with a local and NPR news fix from WBFO. Wandered up the FM band and heard WJYE playing some totally vapid Christmas song and shook my head, wondering how any sane woman with or without a college degree could endure such tripe. People who listen to WJYE or Star because they just HAVE TO HAVE Christmas music at 7:15 a.m. on the Tuesday BEFORE Thanksgiving should have their heads examined. I couldn't take more than 10 seconds of that saccharine crap. I feel good, realizing I am of sound body and mind.

I nudged the dial of my analogue radio a quarter turn to the right and there's 97 Rock, ripping the "All Christmas Station" routine that WJYE and Star go through every year. 97 Rock is doing a parody of WJYE and Star, featuring "Your Home Non-Stop Thanksgiving Hits," complete with the stupid fake phone calls from listeners that go something like "we love the Thanksgiving music you're playing..." In between Norton & Rob, 97 Rock repeatedly plays Adam Sandler's Thanksgiving Song (I Love Turkey.) Sandler's song is funny, even after four or five repeated plays. The bit makes the All Christmas format on Star and WJYE sound even more ridiculous than it is, if that's possible.

A little later, I check out O&A on the Edge. Why is this show on the air in place of Shredd & Ragan? Why!!?? If (when) the Edge morning numbers take a hit, it won't be a surprise to me. O&A are predictable and not anywhere near as entertaining as S&R who, as crude and childish as they can be at times, are moreoften local, topical and funny.

The Lake is next on the thumb scan. Doc and Tom are doing a "let's keep it low key cuz we're the Lake and we've sworn not to do wacky morning show stuff" exchange. They're talking about Thanksgiving... and they have a few good lines about going to Mighty Taco for Thanksgiving. It's interesting to hear these guys almost breaking into a "real" conversation about Thanksgiving, yet trying to keep the lid on it. It's so contained that it's actually funny.

97 Rock wins the morning scan, hands down. Honorable mention to WBFO for news and feature reporting.
