Morning Show Drama at Ottawa's Virgin 106.9

It appears the Gonzo (and probably the whole morning team) was/were fired while ON AIR this morning at Virgin 106.9 for discussing the station's previous brand identity "The Bear" while on the air this week and continually defying management about it.

The story is a little muddy...did they quit or get axed? Sounds to me like an axing. It also sounds like there's a lot more to this story yet to be told.

Virgin is such a stupid name for a radio station. The Bear was a strong brand in Ottawa radio, and the idea to change the name had to have come from ignorant people in some office with no knowledge or research undertaken of the Ottawa market. As a marketing consultant I find rebrandings like this to be very troubling.

What does Virgin mean anyways? Is their target market virgin girls?

It's also worth noting that reach for CKQB has decreased by 31% since the rebranding from The Bear to Virgin, from 118,600 to 82,200. Its closest competitor, CHEZ 106, dropped by 20% during the same period, from 122,400 to 97,700.

CKQB had its market share drop from 6.0 to 4.3 during the same period. In late 2005, their market share was 9.7.

I used to love listening to 106.9 as The Bear. The signal along with the other Ottawa ones do a pretty decent job of blanketing the upper part of New York. Ever since they became The Bear they just haven't felt like the same station. They feel like the cookie cutter format stations owned by conglomerates here in the US. But thats kind of what they are now that Astral Media owns them.

It was odd to brand a rock station after a hit music station brand in Canada anyways . I wonder if they where going to change formats slowly then scraped the idea but sticking with the name.

I think this was all an elaborate stunt since 106.9 returned to using The Bear branding at 8:30 this morning...and Gonzo is back too.

As I've always said, they never should have changed Ottawa's Bear.
Glad to see I was right.

Its nice to see The Bear back in Ottawa, not that it means anything different with the music but I always like The Bear better than Virgin.

At least they learned their lesson in Edmenton and left 100.3 The Bear alone.
