Morning Show Problems at KOOL?

With the departure of Joe Corrao (Mojo) the production of Tom Peake's morning show seems to have hit a few bumps. I usually listen from 6:45 through the end of the "Hollywood Insider" report - about one-half hour each weekday. Not much time, to be sure, but enough to have heard what sounds to me like gaffes in their previously very professional program delivery. Dead air. The DJ coming back from break late and obviously not prepared. Mic's left open (with studio chatter) during a taped delivery. I don't remember any of this happening when Mojo was at the controls.

Coupled with the other changes at KOOL such as VT'd and syndicated programs this just adds to the appearance of a once industry leader headed for the curb.

I can't say I'm surprised to hear that. Mojo's sense of rhythm and timing comes from his background as a musician, he just ... feels it. I think that's what made him stand out to a lot of us. I've never met anyone who put his heart and soul into radio the way he did, even back in the day.

You're going to blame a morning show producer for that?

If I'm not mistaken, that old KZON control room had mic on/offs at each mic, like most morning show set ups, so I can't say you can blame the producer for mics being left on. Each personality can turn their mics off.

If the ratings go down will you blame the guy/gal that pushes the buttons?

JO,

I don't remember placing blame on the producer but rather noticing a slip in the quality of the production.

I don't know who, personally, is responsible for each activity within the studio but it sure don't look as tight as it once was. My two cents. YMMV.

Lee Bortel is producing the show again. He has been making great radio for quite some time.

And Tom has been making great radio on KOOL for quite some time plus a few years.

To my ear mornings sound pretty smooth just like the have for quite some time.

Many people have pointed out that CBS had to let a good guy go in Mojo because of budgets and the bad economy. Could we be confusing the two issues?

Is that the same Mojo who used to do traffic for KTAR? It sounds like Lee Bortel got demoted from the night shift after they went sydication.

Let's just say bounced around, and maybe more importantly, survived.

When Sammy Sherwood retired a few years back, Lee moved from 7-12
into Sammy's slot of AM drive producer/Saturday middays.

Then came the first C(BS) massacre on February 7 and it was back to
evenings for Lee. Ever since, Saturday middays--the most important
weekend daypart--has been a revolving door of OK (Mr. Mellow and
Katfish Kris) to terrible (Rivas).

One and the same. Joe Corrao also did traffic at KZON when they flipped to Free FM.

Looking at some old posts, Corrao was at KOOL a little longer than a year.

On a personal note, I know Mojo will again pick himself up, brush off the dirt, and find a bigger/better job soon. Good Luck!
