Morning Show Retires

Heard word that a long-time Seattle morning show will retire at the end of the year. Any truth to this? Is it Kent and Alan, Bob Rivers, Ichabod, Fisher and West or one of the AM shows? Details anyone? These shows have had great runs and you must hand it to whomever decided to retire while on top.
There is something to admire about a show that leaves at the top of their game. Too many (rick dees comes to mind) hang on for too long and get fired. It is best to leave on your own terms.

I called this one. Fisher and West retire. Marty Reimer to mornings with a new female partner. Probably Jody from The Andy Savage Show. She did fill-in while West was out and she and Marty sounded like gravy. Betcha this new show will lead with women. I love being right.

Just West retiring. Fisher to afternoons. Entercom is also moving the General Manager out. Insider gossip is that new Pd is on thin ice. She and husband, KEXP's Kevin Cole, are possibly moving to New York City to start a public station ala KEXP.

I hope I’m not ruining part of the fun of this board. Yes...working radio people check this place out, even if they don’t want to admit it. It’s hilarious to read some of the posts in this market and others from people who really have no idea what’s going on in the eye of the hurricane. Here’s my deal. I am now retired from radio. I have been getting up at 3:30 in the morning for nearly 30 years and I am spent, and so is my wife who has been with me since I started on KNHC. I had the greatest time working at The Rock when I was just a punk. Helping that place get to number one was truly a highlight. Working with Steve West and Beau Phillips was the best. If we did Leave It To Beaver these days, we would be put in radio prison. My partner John Langan, still kicking butt in Spokane was brilliant. Crow was a blast to work with. He is just….Baby Crow. What can you say about KXRX. It was a play house for Robin and Maynard and Gary and me. Fisher and I had a good time at The Mountain. He's my pal. The Mountain is a great place to work and the new line up will be a hit. Thanks for all of the nice comments on this board over the years and thanks for slamming me from time to time. Believe me, I can take it. But, I don’t have to anymore. I get to sleep in tomorrow and the day after that and...... Can’t say much about this, but look for my musician son to show up in the near future on places like Letterman and Leno and The Mountain Music Lounge. My daughter is at Barsuk Records and my wife is working at The Northshore School District. I am very proud of them. They are the most important part of my life. If I am proud of one thing it's how my wife and I balanced the madness of morning radio and raising our kids. I have so much stuff to do and I can’t wait to get started...Like weeding and detailing my car and playing with the cat. I applaud the passionate people on this board. Radio isn’t quite as cool as it used to be, but maybe someday, the suits will figure out what most of you already know and turn things around.
All the best radio lovers,
Mike West

Congratulations Mike on a great career. As I said at the beginning of this thread, you get to leave on top. Amen to the "suits controlling radio" comment. KXRX was a great radio station, but your time at KMTT was well spent too.

Well done! Thanks for posting.

Diito the congrats comments, Vinnie. You've done the job well and radio in Seattle will be a little less entertaining with your retirement.

Seattle has been blessed with great radio talent over the years… and Mike West epitomizes the bunch, with his unwavering ability to surprise, entertain, and inform every time he opens the mike. I’ll always cherish my copy of “A Wayne Cody Christmas” from an X-winter many years ago. Vincent, hope to catch you on the waves again soon. -Rick

MIKE WEST RESTS

..does this mean we get a BETTER radio interview with Sir Paul McCartney
the next time he comes to town for a show?

Well said. West is a class act.

Jr. High. I would ride the school bus to school, and the bus driver would have KISW on. When I heard Crow & West it just emphasized the fact that I wanted to work in radio. I knew it since age 9, and hearing the show that Gary & Mike did (and Robin & Maynard for that matter) I knew it was in my blood. I had a chance to go work at KXRX and I shall NEVER reveal my true identity on here, but it was simple the most incredible years of my life.

People can say it about whomever they want, but I say it about Vinnie. There is nobody in radio like him. He is truly a one of a kind person. He is the coolest and nicest person working in radio that I have ever met. I always tell people...'Mike West put the Dot in 96DOT5". And he did. I don't post on here that much because of the likes of airwaver, whose agenda I just can't figure out, but I had to say something in this post. Thanks for some great radio Mike. Thanks for some great off the air times. You sir....are a class act.

The next question is: how will Marty do as a morning guy? Will this help or hurt the Mountain?

Got some good info from inside Entercom hallowed halls that Jody will definitely be joining the show. If Marty and she are together long enough, she can help him develop into a good host as she has been great along with with Andy Savage. Marty will be lead, though, and will be great. No more 5:20 funny - now he will have to make the jokes! Hopefully he will translate. I hear that John Fisher may be added as a third eventually.

I liked KXRX and was sad when it left and got replaced by a Country station. The funny thing is once KXRX went off the air I never thought I would go back to 96.5 again and now I listen to Jack FM. I still listen to Jack FM even after over a year although they do repeat songs a lot.

A KXRX Classic!

[1.75 MB - 3:03 - MONO/couldn't get it in stereo then]

This was the 'X' in the afternoon on April Fool's Day 1991 when Maynard (with West)
filled in for Crow that one day and vice versa - (regularly that year 'R&M' in the AM and 'C&W' in PM)

This is one of - if not 'THE' - funniest Mike West I've ever heard - totally hilarious!

Wait a minute - I had assumed (wrong) that West was truly retiring. But in the Virgin article it says he was "pushed" rather than jumping. WTF is wrong with them? They weren't planning on renewing his contract to save money? What?

You sound more upset about it than Mike does. Not all contracts run forever. He had a great run and now he's free to try something else and the radio station is free to change, try new things, create new possibilities and move into the future. They'll pay him what they owe him and move on. Deal with it.
