Morning Zoo on Ninety Two~3

What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is a goin' on with the Sports reports on KT'R-FM? If Nurse Jeff and I didn't know better, we'd think all the sound effects and schtick used by Paul Calvisi were a leftover from the 70's Morning Zoo approach to AMD. Out of place, juevenille and dumb (hmmm...reminds us of 7-10pm). When is the Master Blogger gonna start listening to his station? October 22nd is fast approaching..tick, tick, tick.

Hey, Ned and Connie like the sound fx and that's what matters most. Right?

Btw- I'm waiting for my martini to pour. [queue sfx of martini pouring into the glass] 8)

FAR worse than Paul's Sound effects - Ned's fake laughing all through the sports. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

In all fairness, Paul isn't the only one that shticks up the sports reports--on a national scale, have you ever heard Tom Looney? Every "Fox National Sports Report" starts out with Tom telling you he's been slaving over a hot microphone and then it's soundbytes, slang and the same way of delivering the scores every time. "The Friggin' A's 5 the New York Yankees absolutely nothing!"

I know I sound like some type of curmudgeon, but what ever happened to just doing the sports, giving scores, a highlight clip, perhaps some info about the game, why must it always be mired in wall-to-wall shtick? My experience is that the audience only gets annoyed at it, but I guess there's research to disprove me.

I catch a Calvisi sportscast pretty much every weekday morning. And I know I should probably not like it for all the reasons listed on this thread. But.....the guy makes me laugh. I like the shtick better than a straight sportscast.

Are you saying The Nearly Bald One now has a competitor
in the world of lame sound effects?

Fortunately, when it gets close to 6:15 or they start tossing
to sports, I don't stick around. If I'm on 92.3 I punch over to
94.5, at least until "coming up on 6:19" when it's time for
Deputy Dan vs. the Traffic Twins (on 55/FYI).

I used to wonder why KT'R-FM still did sports reports when they
have Sports Parking Lot 620 at their disposal.

And remember Russ stating late last year that "we won't preempt
N/T on 92.3 for sports PBP"? Then he did a complete one-eighty.

Maybe there should be a whole thread on how ridiculous the past
few weekends have been in terms of news coverage--or lack of--
on KT'R-FM. Ooooh, we can't preempt those three-hour pre-game
shows and four-hour post-game shows! And while the N/T blackout
continued on 92.3 in favor of hours of sports, there was 620 running,
other than the D'backs broadcast, syndicated sports talk.

Did Russ Hill ever say there would be no sports on 92.3? You might be putting words in his mouth, as a lot of people did at the time.

I believe the original company line was that they would not
pre-empt the news/talk programming for live sports on 92.3.

Later, KT'R backpedaled a bit. Remember the release where
he stated there would be a limited number of PBP on FM due
to overlap? (Springtime, Suns and D'backs.) And that the
later start of the two would go on 92.3 to minimize the loss
in the PMD news block? IIRC, that didn't always pan out.

Then KT'R reupped with the Cardinals which was the flammable
element that burst the dirigible (insert Les Nessman Hindenburg
reference here). ASU was already tangled in the drop lines
along with the D'backs, with the Suns waiting on the ground in
Lakehurst. In all the commotion, Herbert Morrison forgot to do
the promo for Landecker's Boogie Check. ;D

Now we've had what gets pretty close to "all sports, all the time"
the past few weekends on snooze/talk 92/3 KT'R-FM, plus syndie
sports talk--when not in PBP--on Sports Parking Lot 620 KT'R.

Enough already.

Show me a press release or blog that says they promised not to air sports programming on 92.3. I think a lot of people assumed that was the case, but I don't remember reading it anywhere. Sure, KTAR spoke of "all sports" on 620, but they conveniently - intentionally - left out any mention of no interruptions of the FM.

I recall a promo presenting both sides: some guy saying "who cares about the news - I want a sports score" and a chic saying "what's this pesky ballgame?". To the ladder, the response: "Not anymore"

I am not a huge fan of games on 92.3, but a) there are probably 150-200 fewer games a year now than there were before, and b) it beats the alternative - trying to listen to the bumped game on 860.

KTAR never proclaimed that they wouldn't do morning sports reports on the News/Talk side. If you are annoyed by 2 minutes of sports on KTAR-FM, then that sounds like more of a personal problem to me.

As for the play-by-play being on News/Talk 92-3: Indeed the original idea was to only put games on 92-3 as a "last resort" type of situation or for games where the better coverage of FM vs. 860 could reach the market for big events, i.e. Suns playoff games, etc. KTAR-FM originally did try to make a point of removing themselves from the play-by-play aspect of sports, however this motto changed quickly.

Let's be completely realistic and businesslike about this; local sports, especially on weekends, are far more valuable from a sales (bottom line) aspect than some canned syndicated talk that nobody cares about. KTAR has a lot of money invested into these aspects and wishes to be able to get top dollar compensatory ad rates for them, shoving the play-by-play to 860 would not have been a smart move--of course now 860 is no longer a part of the company so it's a moot point.

Whoa...gettin' a little off topic, aren't we? This isn't about the Master Blogger's latest spin, it's about the 7th grade approach to sports reports on KTR-FM. What Calvisi is doing doesn't fit with what Ned & Connie are doing. But wait...perhaps the Master Blogger wants Ned and Connie to do schtick? Give the Nurse and me a little time and we'll try to sort it out!

Jeff Munn and Connie Weber. I never thought I would say that, but hearing Jeff fill in for Ned you realize he would be a much better fit for that slot. Sorry Ned. I doubt Munn would want to give up Diamondbacks though...

I disagree. I think Ned Foster fits perfectly for a news oriented morning show. He's about the most friendly and personable sounding newsman out there.

As for the sports sfx, it all depends on the drops.
Something stale from Seinfeld, Beavis and Butthead, or any other hackneyed, overplayed, hokey bit is, of course, going to send the entertainment credibility of the sportscaster into the portapotty. Every drop I've heard from Calvisi has been pretty stale, dated and lame. Is there some kind of service he uses or is he just sampling through dusty vhs tapes?

Now, something hip and current, like something from Dwight on NBC's The Office....yeah!

Enjoying the fall colors on South Mountain: red, red and red,
JD

iirc, ned foster did news for the y95 morning zoo with glenn beck & tim hatrick.

If anything, Network Ned is a survivor - Pulitzer, Emmis BrainTrust & TMISU. Goes with the building, we guess!
