Morning Zoo on Ninety Two~3

I've resisted posting on this website, because I am routinely sickened by actual radio people who choose to fight their battles here. However, as a fan of Calvisi's work, I just want to say: LAY OFF. This guy is energetic, fun, and topical. Way back when, those three attributes were what helped make radio great. Radio's not great anymore, and really not very good at all, because the energy and creativity and "thinking on your feet" is, for the most part, gone. Why rip somebody who gives you information in a timely and accurate fashion, and works hard to make it fun to listen to?

If anything, Network Ned is a survivor - Pulitzer, Emmis BrainTrust & TMISU. Goes with the building, we guess!

Don't forget about Hearst-Argyle! Great socks, lousy radio. ;D

What in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is a goin' on with the Sports reports on KT'R-FM? If Nurse Jeff and I didn't know better, we'd think all the sound effects and schtick used by Paul Calvisi were a leftover from the 70's Morning Zoo approach to AMD. Out of place, juevenille and dumb (hmmm...reminds us of 7-10pm). When is the Master Blogger gonna start listening to his station? October 22nd is fast approaching..tick, tick, tick.

Oh wow look it's another post of you bashing KTAR and you were even able to get your man crush in it too!

How cute

mrpbp said it all Calvisi is great, not just sports scores, not just sports knowledge, but entertainment. They are just GAMES, get it, entertainment. Paul you are the best.

Jay

To mrpbp: AMEN BROTHER! Creativity on the air is nearly extinct.

And Loveable Jay, you're right on, too... Gotta hang onto the F-U-N...

Honkin huge fun in the morning!

I think most of us enjoy creativity, but this act is about as old as the sound files he uses and then some. I'm not a big fan of the same shtick delivered every single day. We have enough local and national "talent" that uses sound effects after every other word--typically this is a huge indicator to many in the business that one is substituting sound bytes for content and talent. It's not just about Calvisi, it's a problem where everyone thinks that they have to reinvent the wheel and it's just not necessary.

What ever happened to just giving the score of the game and some details and highlights?

I do agree that creativity is stifled in the business today--but this style of reporting is not creative, it was out 10 years ago.

I could take or leave Calvisi, but I'll agree that his choice of sound bites is a little stale. It's as if he dubbed lines from his favorite movies in college, and has been using them ever since. If I did that, there would be PCU, Tommy Boy, Demolition Man and not much else!

Kinda like Movin' 97~Five...and your point is what? Judging by the response to this topic, we'd say our analysis is right on target. Sorry the Nurse and I can't keep everyone on Central happy, but that's really not our job!

Back to the original point:

I look at FMNewsTalk923 just like the Today show: some hard news and some fluffy stuff. Not necessarily morning zoo. As mentioned in another posting, Connie Weber seems to be all business (all the time) but Ned Foster is a mix. Calvisi and Detour Dan try to show the fun side of morning radio. But does it belong on a News program? If the PD wanted a hard news morning show he would pair up Weber with Joe Adams.

When I hear Paul Calvisi's updates I think of the "Sportscenter-ization" of giving sports news. Currently, a lot of sportsreaders give info while adding as much shtick as they can.

Paul Calvisi has great energy, a great delivery and great spirt. I can't imagine anyone doing the KTAR job any better. I admire him for trying to interject some fun into his sportscast.

I wasn't knocking him, just the hokey drops and sfx.
People in radio should certainly have thick enough skin to take constructive criticism from their peers, especially when that criticism has a bit of validity.

Ned, Connie, Dan and Paul are a great team. I listen to them every morning.

Those of us who have been on this board for years know Akbar has been upset since he got back from Oxford and didn't return to KTAR afternoons. He expected it to happen when Hill let McMahon go. When, it didn't, that's when he turned into the stalker. He's a sick obsessed man. All you have to do is read the topics he brings up like this one where he's reduced to critiquing the morning sports guys transcripts. It's sad. :'(

We're Femino? Nope

We're Stalkers? Nope

We're Oxford Grads? Nope

Sick & Obsessed? Yes indeedy...and who isn't in this business?

I know who Dr. Akbar is ;D, but I just can't figure out who Nurse Jeff is. ???

If Dr. Akbar is Femino, does that make Nurse Jeff Gaydos? :-X

A good guess, but Femino would never be seen in a Gremlin, especially not wearing a fez. As for Gaydos, I have this to say: "What a joke!" ;D

Actually, I think Calvisi is copying a sports reporter on Los Angeles radio station KNX. To me, the original ideas are started over there and copied everywhere else in between the left and right coasts.
