Classic Hits Morning Show at the beach!

How's a job at the beach sound? CapSan Media is looking for the next Classic Hits morning show for WFMZ on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Come to the beach and hone your skills with a fun group of people who are driven to win! We need someone who will embrace the community and be a leader. Good pay for a smaller market with lots of extra earning potential through numerous remotes. Production skills required. Send MP3 packages to Allen Orsini, VP Programming at [email protected]. EOE.

I'm curious what does that mean? What is "good pay?" What is a "smaller market?" Is this good pay for a teeny tiny market? Or is this good pay for a smaller market? Come on, don't blow me crap. Are there benefits, hmm? Parking space? Are you gonna pay me what I'm worth?

Good pay is about $10,000 less than the last guy was making.

Smaller market is the Outter Banks of NC. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

These stations in particular, the facility is less than amazing. The previous owner moved all the stations south to Wanchese, which meant taking WVOD out of it's nice store front location in Manteo.

OBX is a resort market, and finally made it into the Arbitrons SP05(and was then deleted). WERX is a much cooler sounding station in the same market and format, and has about twice the listeners. WFMZ could be a classic hits station anywhere, it has no regional identity like ERX (102.5 The Shark).

I would venture that "good pay" in an unrated market couldn't be less than 25k-30k unless they factor in all the remotes you'll be doing, in which case it would be 20k. That said, the owners are new, so maybe they're willing to infuse some cash to build good stations. The previouis owners rant the stations in a very generic manner, which was particularly a shame with WVOD which had a great sound (Voices of Dare - We Bridge Sounds). I think they made a step in the right direction by re-launching a country format with Orville and Wilbur.

Nah man, Shark is good listening. Lots of underplayed oldies, 104.9 is very cookie cutter, for a real classic hits station see The Ride 95.7 in Charlotte, they should be the blueprint for every station postioning themselves in this manner.

I built the transmitter facility for WVOD when Orbit upgraded from 3kw to 50kw. At the time I worked for a contract firm out of Virginia Beach. The facility was very well funded and done well. I went back 14 years later and moved the studios from the store front in Manteo to the Wanchese facility under the next owner. While the current studios may be "less than amazing" - to be sure I have seen (and done) worse. The facility they moved to was already a radio station and it made good sense to move it all under one roof.

What the facility may lack in fancy equipment is made up for by a setting that you can't get anywhere else. It's on the waterfront and very peaceful. Some of the best shows I have heard in my 30 year broadcast path have been done without the aid of the shiniest consoles and mile long audio processing chains. A real pro can pick up whatever is around him and her and work with it. Anyone serious about their job could very quickly make the less than amazing facilty their home.

Bridging sounds was a cool liner and the station in the late 80s had a really good air staff. WVOD like any radio station has potential to be a great radio station with the right people behind the mic. They have a superrior signal on "the banks". If your goal isn't to become the wealthiest DJ on the air but is to be the best at what you do in a really cool setting - this may be the home for you!

No, I don't work for the company! I just understand how stuff works out there!

WVOD got smoked by Beach 95 bigtime back then, until the owner thought people would rather hear Kenny Rogers than Blues Traveler ('93). And satellite radio rather than local/live. Then it all imploded, and 'VOD got handed a format and core listeners.

They were both good stations to listen to in the early 90's. Tim, an engineer I worked with also worked on that facility which got me interested in it again in the early aught's. True, talent doesn't need the super expensive stuff to do good radio, and the equipment is a step up from that old (Gates? Harris?) board they had in Manteo. What proves the point is that I loved listening to them so much more than my hometown Charlotte stations back then because they were really doing great radio. Although it did kind of suck that they both signed off at midnight. I really liked the jazz on Beach and classical on WVOD on the weekends.

But when I stopped by the studios one night when I happened to be in town a couple of years ago, I was kind of disappointed to see it shuttered tight, and empty at 6pm. A CHR with no night jock to do phones? A one way ticket to death of a format.

By the way, if you like the liner, you can see and hear it resurrected here: http://www.publicradioeast.org/

Never let it be said that I steal junk.

TimKim thanks for the link and I also loved the Sunday morning classical, Jazz, and CBS news. WVOD was really well done radio. The owner was a very intelligent operator and person that absolutely did not like her product distorted. I was able to use very little processing and the station sounded like a million bucks. The old Gates board was really pretty clean but when we retired it from the storefront it was beyond tired. The "new" studio used a rockewll board (Collins) and it too is pretty clean. Beach 95 was also a very good radio station. I was sad when the whole project out there was over. It took the better part of five months with the new tower and transmitter site but had a great time and met some really good people.
