KFRG DOUBLED it's ratings in the LA market, and their morning show did beat both Adam Corolla & Rick Dees.

KFRG is once again #1 in the Riverside market, and it's cume is the second highest of any country station in America.

That's just MORE proof as to how Emmis (and ex-PD RJ Curtis, now the R&R country radio editor) were so clueless and incompetent in programming KZLA, and why Jimmy Steal's VERY lame attempt at 'playing the race card' in explaining why KZLA flipped was a stinging indictment of HIS incompetence.

What does that mean?

KFRG (even with it's doubled ratings) doesn't make the impact KZLA did (which wasn't enough). Give Movin' time. So they beat Dees?? Does that mean Dees doesnt have to ability to win ratings-wise? He's demonstrated it many times before.

And stop with the "race card". Emmis made the right move. You DO know that Jimmy Steal himself is white, correct?

Nice try, but just looking at a couple of markets, I found three country stations with a higher cume than KFRG. So KFRG is nowhere near the top cuntry cumer in the US. Of course, doubling a share that was about ahalf share in LA to around a 1 share is no big deal. At that level, a half-share point is within the margin of error of the survey! Personally, I think they, KFRG, did increase a lot, but "lot" is relative. The amount they increased is 1/10th of the share of the #1 station in LA... so it is a minor blip on the screen.

I combined the IE and LA to find the KFRG cume... and then looked at WUSN in Chicago, which has 120,000 higher cume and in Dallas, KPLX beats it and KSCS ties it.

Of course, the real issue is that KFRG is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay down there in the LA market alone, considerably below the level KZLA was at.

There is no race card. LA is 42% Hispanic, 8% Black, 12% Asian and 10% or more first generation immigrants form places like Persia and russia. As a whole, this group has nearly no partisanship for country.

If you look at country shares in Las vegas, Seattle, Portland, etc (larger metros with high growth and no "boots and buckles" lifestyle, you will find country to be generating around 6% to 8% of listening. Apply that to the 25% of the market in LA that is non-Immigrant non-Hispanic white,a nd you get a 1.6 to 2.0 share... and declining as the percentage of non-Hispanic whites declines as the rest of the market grows.

No matter who programmed or owned or operated KZLA, it was a long-term losing situation, with no hopes of increasing or even holding the share they had in the last year or so.

KZLA was never country. It was just whatever Nashville had to offer that happened to be non-offensive to an AC audience. Anything with a banjo, or redneck type theme (most of country) was shelved in favor of Faith Hill during her Celine Deone phase. KHAY and KFRG played country music to people who liked country music. And they still exist.

hey Bogus...you DO know it's no longer 1968...right? Country is no longer "anything with a banjo or redneck type theme".
I'm in Nashville...and that's not what plays here. WSM-AM plays the older stuff...and does well...but the three
competitive FMs do not. KZLA would have done well here: as per countless previous posts, they ran out of audience
in Los ANgeles...and no more growth was possible. BTW...have you listened to KHAY? Pretty mainstream...

Emmis made the "right move"? Of what? To be the lowest rated full market FM in this market since Evergreen's 1989's disasterous "Rock With A Beat"? Quite an accomplishment!

I DO know that Mr. Steal is white.

KFRG's cume numbers, as well as the statement that their cume is the second-highest of any country station in America came from their PD.

They're also in the process of installing another transmitter to boost their signal/coverage in Orange County.

But being #1 in a market with an ethnic mix VERY close to LA's radio stations shows that Emmis was responsible for KZLA's demise, and ex-PD R J Curtis (onetime PD of Phoenix country powerhouse KNIX and now the country radio editor @ R&R) was somewhat clueless, and especially handicapped with having the worst morning show in the market in a city full of VERY successful adult-oriented morning shows.

I know that it's too early to pass judgement on Dees's numbers, but the undisputed fact of the matter is that KFRG's LA ratings DOUBLED with almost NO money spent on marketing in the LA market, which can only be described as astonishing.

KFROG may not be done yet. Do you think they can continue to grow? It's good to hear country every once in awhile not sure how wide reaching the audience is.

Funny that no one thinks it's a "race card" when the assumption is that Hispanics won't listen to country and that they only listen to "rhythmic AC"... though Movin' proves that they don't do that either ...

KFRG is back at #1 in the Riverside/SB market, ahead of CHR/Rhythmic powerhouse KGGI.

KFRG is among the VERY best country stations west of the Rockies, and the same goes for KGGI as it relates to CHR/Rhythmic stations.

Neither station is going anywhere, and both of them have GREAT morning shows, something KZLA never had under Peter Tilden.

Chicago, Dallas and Houston all have country stations that cume more. This is untrue.

A booster can only be used to fill in shadow areas, not extend coverage.

The IE has nothing like the ethnicity of LA... fewer Hispanics, fewer Blacks, much fewer asians, and very few "other" immigrants (like Russians, Persians, etc.) and a definite conntry lifestyle that does not exist in LA makes the IE very different.

Going from nothing to nothing is hadly significant. A one share is not salable in LA.

At least GoCountry105 has a terrific morning show, something that KZLA never had, and a MUCH better signal which is NON-directional.

The ethnic mixes for both LA and Riverside counties are fine for a country station to be VERY successful, and the multi-county battle for country listeners and their HUGE amounts of disposable income between KFRG & KKGO will be very closely watched.

KMZT got a 1.5 in their final book, but their projected advertising income for 2007 was going to be BELOW $1,000,000 so they had no choice than to flip.

That morning show is A LOT of fun to listen to... turn it on from the time I get up in the morning and listen all the way into work...

There aren't too many morning drive shows for baby-boomers and adults to listen to here in LA, but this is certainly one of them!!!!!
