Moseley Starlink problem?

I have a station where the AES audio has suddenly changed to a very shrill, swishy, coded sound. The bass also seems to have thinned out a bit. This is a non-compressed link running at 44.1. I have swept the console, switching systems, audio storage and sound card. No problems. On the transmit end the main and aux processors sound the same so it's not the processor. The post BER is showing no errors. I do not own any AES test equipment. Everything points at the Starlink. Any ideas? Thanks, FM

Interference swamping the receiver. Quite regular here in Indy with the poor souls who bought this crap thinking it would work.

BTDT. If it is in the STL, bounce (unplug/replug) the STL receiver -- and the audio processor since I am guessing you are using AES from the STL to feed it. Your goal is to re-sync the system, which has somehow come mis-locked to a different sample rate

I'm quite sure there was a previous thread on this. I'll hunt it up but this should be a quick fix.

I have seen several starlinks that have this problem. I have sent them back to Mosely repeatedly for service, and they come back "NPF" but they sure do work. I recall hearing from a friend in the biz that there is a defect in the AES audio path of these units, and under intense pressure, Mosely will admit it and fix the problem for you.
Also, make sure your sampling rate is set correctly starting at the console output all the way to the processor.

Having experienced the same problem, I am told that the problem is caused by an instantaneous AES dropout from the Starlink which fools the processor into readjusting the filters which cause it to sound like an abrupt bitrate change.

The Omnia folks have come up with a software upgrade that senses the change and breaks the AES stream for a few microseconds to restore normal performance.

This is exactly what is going on. My Starlink will cause problems just like this and all that is needed is to "reboot" the receiver. This generally will clear things right up. Interested to know about the "upgrade" for the Omnia though...wasn't aware there was one.

They swapped out the dayparting feature to make room for this.

They will send you the new card for free if you promise to send the old one back.

Cool...I'll have to contact Mark and get that upgrade. The problem has only happened once since I have been here, but it was irritating when it did.

I recently installed a Starlink as part of an HD upgrade. Everything worked fine for 34 days then then we had audio drop outs, and the audio quality would suffer. Moseley claimed that it was signal level. Funny thing was the level was solid thru all kinds of conditions and still solid dispite the drop outs. I did notice that prior to an incident the audio would become muffled then I would get the drop out thne it would return.

I have a bandpass filter on the receiver input, and a Cresend Booster amp on the transmitter. All spectrum analysis showed not interference.

I know there was a mod on the older audio receiver cards to go along with the Harris Flexstar system but I have the latest version of everything.

Now, until Moseley sends a loaner system I am off HD and running my new HT-HD50 with analog Composite.

Zach,

There's a S/W upgrade that will fix this. The problem is in the StarLink, but we came up with a way to rectify the situation. Contact our Support Dept (216) 241-3343. They'll get you all fixed up...at no charge!

Thank you Frank! My Omnia is in your shop for repair, but the problem may not be the Omnia! I will call and have the S/W Upgrade done while you have it.
