;D OK folks, who do you think is the most ADMIRED GM? Criteria can include, best motivator, best salesmanship, best natural programming sense and best nose for good talent both in front of and behind the mic...so to speak.

I would probably pick Victor Sansone from Kicks/Eagle. From the people I know who work for the guy, they generally like him. He's also the president of the Country Music Association and that's not an easy gig I bet! Plus, he's been with the company for years in one form or another. Granted, he may have allowed Moby to slip away and what's happened after that is not the most stellar but I'll bet he's just doing what his bosses are telling him to...to a certain extent.

All things considered, I'd like to work for the guy! He doesn't have a thing to do with WGST and that's a BIG PLUS!

I know that I'm admired, by the folks at Cox and Cumulus, for all the listeners and revenue dollars they've been able to pick up as a result of my incompetence!
 
J. Jerdan Bullard, now retired, managed WZZK in Birmingham for Katz/NewCity/Cox forever. Kaept the place on top of the ratings and amde piles of money with it.
Current generation, let's watch Tony Kidd closely and see how he does. He's worked for some of the masters on his way up.

Hands down: HOWARD JOHNSON WZYQ

Why he blew out more great talent than anyone i know. He was the greatest. Nice teeth too :D

I think he's running a subway sandwhich shop in WV.

Joe Pedicino was a helluva G.M. Even though many bad things have been said on other posts in the past 8 months about this man and his inability to run his stations. Most of those opinions are from people with very little ,if any, grasp of reality. But let us not go down that path now.

Joe Pedicino came into a situation and an area he was not familiar back in the "90's. He brought us together , added more parts, changed some of the programming and kept as many people from the prior ownership as was humanly possible. From there he added more sales people and constantly challenged us to be the best we could be. And that worked pretty damn successfully for 10m years. Until the man finally had a chance to make a move that would have made it better for all the top people in Joe's inner circle and most every other employee at the stations. However, Joe's right hand person decided she and some other croonies who were fearing their jobs might be affected decided to throw him under the cc corporate bus and it worked. Less than 2 weeks later Joe was gone and we haven't had the same quality direction since.

There is, of course, more to this story but maybe another day.

Suffice it to say. Joe Pedicino without a doubt deserves to be included on the list for his many accomplishments, both recent and back in his Atlanta days with one of the hottest stations in the Atlanta market.

I enjoyed working for Joe Pedicino too!
We were like a big ol' sloppy family in Newnan....it started with Chuck Tarkenton and continued when Joe and his partners bought the station. We were a well oiled machine....and very profitable! Everyone did their job, and did it well....it made life very easy for me as the contract technical guy.
Joe is one of the best "idea" guys I've ever known.....and I guess the only TV "STAR" I ever knew!(Joe, and his wife Bonnie, hosted "wraslin'" on TBS)
I also enjoyed working for Tom Connally at 96 Rock in the 80's and 90's. Tom left people alone and let then do their "thang"....and bought beer for the staff on Friday. Tom made that place a fantastic place to work....I miss it!

Tony Michaels at Renda-owned WGSM (Sam FM 107.1). Very easygoing guy. Started in this business doing a part-time oldies show on a dog station over the weekend, gave up his highly lucrative mechanical engineering job to sell radio time at the same station as his day job, survived three ownership changes, and was running the place in five years. He gets things done and because of his past on-air experience and his current oldies cover band, he's able to identify with the so-called 'artistic temperament' that a lot of jocks have. He's a very open and engaging individual who actually cares about his people and their lives on and off the job.

I'd have to agree that Howard Johnson was the best. I worked for Howard at WZYQ in 1977. Years later (in 2003), I hired Howard to run my stations in Mississippi, including the aptly-named WZYQ. (The old WZYQ in Frederick had long since changed to something else). He was most recently the SM of the Clear Channel cluster in Bakersfield. He and I are currently looking at buying a couple of stations together. He doesn't have a Subway Sandwich shop in West Viurginia.

Let me guess you going to bring in that fat cigar chomping Joe Johnson? What a joke he is!!!!! He and Howard made a great team. ;)
