Most likely NYC Rock scenario

Q to become a mainstream rocker. Mostly classics, a few "safe" currents (i.e. Nickelback, not Limp Bizkit) thrown in. Maybe a little extra Pearl Jam. Stands to gain a few listeners due to being the only game in town. NYC XM and Sirius subscriptions continue to grow.....

Exactly. That's what I was thinking as well. WAXQ would be smart to do that - to capture what's left of K-Rock's already eroding audience once it goes Free-FM on us. I think they'll probably wind up sounding a lot like WMMR in Philly.</P>

As much as I'd like to see another scenario (24/7 Modern Rock done the right way, ala CBS/Infinity's O-Rock 105.9 in Orlando), it's not likely - the other stations bill too well for this to happen. You can add Modern Rock (maybe even Active Rock) to the list of formats that are non-existant in the nation's largest market.</P>
 
People have talked about potentially flipping WQCD 101.9...Emmis owns Q101 in Chicago, arguably one of the more influential alternative stations in the country....and quite a nice mixture of music, imho....

Any thoughts of them importing that alternative format to 101.9 to fill the gaping alt/rock hole in NYC?

What WLTW is to AC playing music from the 60s to today, WAXQ 1043 could be the same when it comes to Classic and Mainstream Rock.

Does WBAB on Long Island mix 60s Rock with today's Mainstream Rock?

>I see this differently. Q 104.3 has established itself as THE premiere classic rock station in the country. Their sound is tuned to attract the more "safe" side of classic rock which makes it bill well. Rod Stewart, Rolling Stones, Floyd, etc. I don't see Q throwing in heavy rotation Staind, Nickelback, Metallica, GNR, Motley Crue. Yes, Q might play them sometimes but If Q tries to become a mainstream rocker...it might make their already loyal classic rock listener think twice and they might be choosing the many classic rock stations offered in the suburbs.

Kevin: I would describe WBAB as being Mainstream Rock in the vein of the old WNEW. They play everything from the Beatles and the Stones to stuff like Nickelback and 3 Doors Down, but don't go into the edgier rock acts like Disturbed, Godsmack and Korn. To that end, you couldn't really call them an substitute for WXRK (and I'm not sure if they have a good signal in NYC anyway) - however, I can definitely picture WAXQ following an approach like this in the hopes of gaining some of K-Rock's listeners without alienating their current audience.</P>

Then why the change to "New York Chill" (which I actually enjoyed), only to come back to their old lighter-than-Lite-FM sound? Obviously they weren't pleased with where they were and wanted to try something different, but were disappointed with the results and reverted back to the old "smooth jazz" sound.</P>

This tells me that Emmis would not be opposed to a format change, provided that the ratings that they're looking for with WQCD aren't there. It could happen. Personally, I'd rather see one of the Hot ACs or Rhythmics give way to a Modern Rock format, but given Emmis' track record elsewhere, they just might be the ones to give it a shot.</P>
 
I agree that there's other stations personally that I'd like to flip first...however, I'd still love to see an alternative format like Q101 n NYC...it would have to build a base and get some cache among people (the same way Q101 has in Chicago), but certainly could be fun when you open the alternative play list up a bit...

Im afraid you are mislead. Q101 although it is in a huge market (number 3) influences nothing. They are never even mentioned in conversation about alternative players they are sort of an also ran. Not a bad station but they influence nothing.
