Most other Boston FM stations not affected by Mike FM

I was hoping that Mike FM would cause other stations, especially 105.7 WROR and Oldies 103 to widen thier playlists but they still sound as dull, boring, and repetitive as before. Yeah, Mix 98.5 is doing thier 80's, 90's, and whatever but it still sounds like they are being conservative and staying close to their Hot AC format instead of really letting loose and playing more "Oh Wow!" songs that no one else will touch. All the other Boston stations sound the same. The only station that actually sounds closest to a Jack station is Cape Cod's Cool 102 (101.9). <P ID="signature">______________

Take it from someone who travels a lot - Boston's FM dial is extremely conservative and boring. Even markets in the 30's and 40's have more musical diversity than metro Boston.

I know I'll get flamed for this comment, but Kiss 108 is a really old and female skewing CHR station. Yes, it's CHR, but I've also heard them play older songs during the evening from artists popular with women - such as Cyndi Lauper. To me, it has a very watered-down sound and is not nearly as energetic as other major market CHRs that are younger skewing.

Jamn is hip hop (only) for white suburban kids. Nothing urban about it (unlike WBOT). WBOT sounds pretty good musically to my ear, but only if I happen to be in its very limited signal area. Which is rarely. And that's a big reason why they don't have many listeners. Unlistenable in most of Middlesex and Essex Counties and totally non existent in areas around Nashua & Salem, NH. Collectively, there's a big chunk of the Boston market.

All Jack - I mean Mike - did was to wipe out the only FMer in Boston that was different from the other, rock/pop-based music stations (Star). Nobody else adjusted because they don't have to. Not here, at least.

Too bad it wasn't Mix or WROR that went Jack - we wouldn't have lost anything.

I heard Matty play AC/DC on Friday morning. I think they are widening the playlist a bit.

This is very true. KIIS FM and Z100 have alot more edge in comparison!

One of the dumbest things a station can do is to over-react to a new competitor..especially one in an unproven format. Why drive your station off a cliff if the whole "Jack" fad crashes & burns in 6 months?

In the bigger markets, much more is at stake, and it is much more competitive.

Therefore, the stations play it much more conservative.

However, you usually have MORE stations in the larger markets....so each station can play to a much narrower audience.

Does this surprise you?
