Most pirates sound the same

nd2023

Banned
Caribbean or reggae or hip hop music, interrupted by the DJ yelling into the mic in the middle of the song, a few more seconds of the song, and then more yelling. There are more places on the radio dial to hear Caribbean music than to hear Britney Spears. Shut those down!!!

I was associated with a pirate station from the 90's to about 2004, and yes, it was Hip-Hop and R&B, but I never shouted into the mic. I used to be a Technical Director at a station prior to that, in other words, I kept the audio chain as clean as it could be.

Do they ever shut any of the pirates down?
If they do apparently it doesn't discourage others.

Apparently not. In Newark, Streetz 96 has been on the air since 2005, not to mention getting ads and broadcasting in nightclubs. Smart move on them, to broadcast in an apartment complex, will take the FCC a while to find where the studio is located, if they are interested to raid them. Then you have Roadblock Radio, from the top of a store, to the top of a power pole. Elite Radio 97.5, 99.3 The Joynt, 102.5 (spanish) and all others have been on more than a year. One station I did hear a lot of talk (creole to be exact)was the pirate on 87.9, that was bleeding out Pulse 87.

Amazing. The FCC just doesn't care. Maybe I'll start a station.

I'll listen to it :D

Radioman148, you're on a lot of boards including the DX board. Recently someone there was talking about a daytimer that failed to sign off at local sunset. Someone responded about the FCC not having enough personnel due to low budget. That's probably the case re. pirates. If enough complaints, then maybe the FCC will take action.

Not all pirates are bad,,, but the ones that block out local signals,,, overmodulate, and curse on air are criminal... There is somewhat of a difference between an unlicensed Profesional Comunity station,, and the thugs that run the stations in Crowded cities and deprive listeners of their local station for entertainment and emergencies.

I serve my comunity with a small station, but its just a hobby, but the audio is clean,,, doesnt bleed into anybody,,, its filtered to not cause Air Traffic interference,, and the Format is Dance music,,, which isnt heard in the area,,, we also air Amber Alerts and EAS... Flood Warnings ETC....

If its an overmodulated POS ran by Gang members to sell drugs and guns and spray interference all over the band, then yes.... I absolutely would report them and track them down.. Regardless of music, weather its the carribean music, which I dont mind really, Unedited Hip HOP or Christian music,,,, Even if it was a Dance music Pirate I would still report them if they were doing bad things and causing interference.

On the other hand.. up in Boston,,, Touch FM-An Urban AC with clean audio, which really serves the public interest should be left alone if they dont hurt anyone.

This is where the issue is. The FCC will have no problem raiding stations that use vacant channels (Beat 97.7 from Minneapolis) for example, but don't bother with stations like Streetz 96 (96.5 mind you, bleeding on WQXR, and 96.7 The Coast, and as far south as New Brunswick to interfere with Wired.) 102.5 Rumba I think bleeds through Fresh, 99.3 The Joynt bleeds through WBAI. 87.9 (creole talk) is killing Pulse 87. I also remember some pirate on 106.3 killing G-Rock.

I don't live in the NY area, but it sure seems like there are tons of pirates there and nobody cares.

That's an understatement. If you surf the dial in Brooklyn at night can find at least 10 pirates all broadcasting reggae, hip hop, caribbean with lots and lots of screaming and yelling throughout the songs.
It's surreal.

Well I guess the FCC just doesn't care. If you want to run a radio station just get the equipment & go for it.

The FCC's method of shutting down stations is threatening them with a fine. Even when inspectors visit, they just get to drool over the equipment the pirate stations have, and take transmitter readings and field strength measurements. The fines are never paid, equipment is never confiscated, or even turned off. Streetz 96 got a warning letter, the next day, I heard hip hop on 96.5 in Newark. I think there are less than 5 real busts per year all over the country. A new pirate station can be started in less than a week. In fact, you can start a pirate station if you just attach aluminum foil to your iPod FM transmitter, that's how strict the Part 15 law is.

Boston area has alot of Pirate radio ( 106.1,96.5,105.3,105.5,94.9,102.9,99.7 and 101.1 ). Boston legal stations are GARBAGE, but Boston Pirate stations are AWESOME !! I LOVE PIRATE RADIO !!!!

Well I guess that tells us that anyone & everyone can start a pirate station if they want to with no fear.

Not to mention getting paid advertisers and broadcasting in nightclubs. Streetz 96 gets more advertisers than Pulse 87.

Streetz 96 is getting the advertisers that can't afford Hot 97 and Power 105. I think Streetz 96 cumes 20,000 in downtown Newark, which is pretty sad. I'm willing to bet that people used to write "Streetz 96.5" in their Arbitron diary, and either WQXR or WRDW got the credit.

In recent weeks, I've gotten pirates in the NYC area on:

87.7, 87.9, 88.1, 88.5, 88.7, 89.3, 89.7, 90.1, 91.3, 91.9, 94.3, 94.5, 95.1, 95.9, 96.1, 96.5, 96.7, 97.5, 99.9, 101.5, 102.3, 102.5, 103.1, 103.9, 104.7, 105.5, 106.3, 106.9, 107.3, 107.9, and I'm sure I'm probably missing a couple.
