Most Popular DJ

Would anybody have an idea, based on ratings if possible, who in Atlanta radio history has been the most popular DJ, show, team, etc.?

Gary McKee has got to be close to the top

most Popular DJ

Without question to me, Gary McKee was the consumate personality. He was water cooler talk throughout the 80's for Atlanta. Topical daily, great features and support personalities but he carried the show with a great sense of timing and skill. His sense of humor and delivery was "Atlanta". Nothing fabricated...he was the real deal and what every talent should want to be today.

I really think Fat Kid should be near the top of this list as well. ;P

Based on ratings and longevity it would be Gary McKee... no contest.

Re: most Popular DJ

I'm really glad to see the board looking back at two giants of top 40. There was a time in the 70's and 80's when McKee and Harper owned the younger demographics. They truly are legends in the business.
Now, on the older demo's, you have to look at the team of John Moore and Jim Howell on the WSB Merry Go Round in the 1970's -- a show that commanded as much as a third of the radio audience each morning. They were DJ's, playing records, although it was more of the Elvis Presley and Roger Whittaker genre. (Lest anyone scoff at that kind of number, I was on WSB at the time so call me a reliable source!)

Still, I agree with the posters -- McKee and Harper -- they owned the hearts and minds of younger listeners during their days on the radio. Harper's morning calls -- waking up the likes of the mayor and throwing them on live without warning (in the days before the FCC frowned upon such antics) were hilarious -- and it became a badge of honor in Atlanta if you were awakened by a call from Skinny Bobby. McKee commanded a tight top 40 show with great characters like Red Neckerson, truly funny commedy bits, and aided by some very good news and sports guys.

For new posters, Bobby Harper passed away a few years back. McKee retired a few years ago and is living in retirement right here in his beloved Atlanta.

If memory serves, an article in the AJC back in 1989 showed that McKee was number one in AM drive (12+) from 1979-86. I can't think of anyone else who might come close to being at the top for that long.

Re: most Popular DJ

Mike's right.

Jim and John ruled.

Worked with McKee for most of that time and he was amazing.

FAVE BIT:

Woman calls McKee and sounds like Moms Mabley-

McKee: Morning Quixie and 94Q..

Woman: Where's my husband?

McKee: (concerned) I'm quite sure I don't know m'am...

Woman: Before he left he built me this apartment over top of a Savings and Loan.

McKee: Really?

Woman: Now my assets over one million dollars!(rim shot)heh-heh..

Now that I'm in Louisville just found out that Harper came through here in the late 60's. Hotel operator where I'm staying took a broadcasting class from Bobby in 1967 or '68.

I agree with the love for McKee and Skinny Bobby, but what about Steve Mc? Dude has been in the market FOREVER and has made the transition from small market to larger market right along with the city.

And since the question is based on ratings......I dunno, its hard to compare a rating share in 1978 versus 1998, right? (I'm looking at the old timers here because I honestly dont know)

I 'grew up' in Louisville: SBH did mornings on the old WAKY IIRC.
I think Bill Bailey came back to WAKY (from WLS and WKLO before that)
when Bobby went to Atlanta. But it WAS a very long time ago.
Louisville has always had good radio battles.
And in the late 60's, WLS, WCFL, and WABC all made it in like locals at night.
My push buttons were WABC 770/WAKY 790/WLS 890/WCFL 1000/WKLO 1080:
always great radio ! Good luck with LOUIE!
______________
but wait...there's more!

Re: most Popular DJ

You're right Mike. Jim Howell and John Moore ruled the mornings...
