Most recognized talk host in Houston?

What I am asking is when you think of Houston talk radio personalities, from a local standpoint, which one stands out as say the signature local voice of Houston talk radio.

News or Sports? Past, present or both? I suppose for news it would be Pat Gray on KPRC and Chris Baker on KTRH. Both have been the most stable on the air. By most stable, I mean being on the air consistantly for the past few years. The same can be said for Dan Patrick on KSEV. I can't comment on sports, because I do not listen. However, I've known Rich Lord for many years going back to KFRD, when he and I worked there in 1981.

Most recognized talkers in H-Town (IMHO):Home improvement - Tom TynanTechnology (and general lifestyle/entertainment) - Michael GarfieldGardening (big topic, believe it or not) - Randy LemmonSports (and useless sports trivia) - Charlie PalliloBusiness (and Money) - Brent Clanton

First I want to say to you all how much I missed you all during this tough transition. I would say the top five radio talk show hosts ever in this city (maybe anywhere) are:1. Deborah Duncan2. Chris Baker3. Pat Gray4. Sam Malone5. Michael BerryHola radio listeners, ROCK IS DEAD!!!!!!!!!

The 5 of them combined can't hold a candle to Mike Garfield (Saturdays 12-2 PM on KPRC 950, A Clear Channel station, by the way) and Chris Tritico (Saturdays 2-5 PM on KTRH 740, A Clear Channel station, by the way).As for national, I listen to Ed Schultz and Kim Komando. And I agree that Rock is indeed dead.Rock Hudson that is! ;D ;D ;D

Radiogeek - you are either the PR hack for CC or slowly trying to convince them to switch their weekend hosts with their weekday hosts. (which may not be a bad thing).

Switching weekend hosts with the big time weekday hosts on kprc might not be a bad idea. Put Michael Garfield on from 10 am to 5 pm on kprc. Why not mornings? He should have an FM morning show say on Mix 96.5. The more he is on the better. Advertisers love him. They get a great return on him. And we all know is that broadcasting starts with a 'b' for a readon...'b' for business. Money, money, money. TheClearAnswer has spoken and you just got some programming sense knocked into you

I agree about Tom Tynan regarding home maintenance shows. KTRH lost its dominance of that area when they drove Tom away.I like listening to Baker, he is much more entertaining than Sam Malone or Pat Gray.

I'm not sure if I agree with the term "ever." The reason is that in the past we've had some good talk show hosts which were/are better than the forementioned 5. Unless you are a native Houstonian, you would not know of the popularity of the following talk show hosts:Alvin Van Black KPRC DeceasedDewey Compton KTRH DeceasedBob Stephenson Sr. and his son Bob Jr KTRH, KXYZ, KENR & KILT Both deceasedRoger Gray KPRC Now news director of KTBB Tyler, Texas

I agree on Roger Gray being one of the best from the past.I like Chris Baker, but not on KTRH. Too many interruptions to keep the flow of the show going. Every 2 minutes it seems he has to break for news or traffic or spots or something. Edd Hendee does a good show on KSEV in the mornings. I could be biased though since I do traffic and news during his show.Kevinc

(or a high-profile spot at one of the newly enlarged Cumulus group stations. Ssshh. Working...)

I was reading through the posts on best talk show personalies and being a native Houstonian I am knowledgeable about most of the personalities, but I did not recognize Brent Clanton. Who is he and what station is he with? I didn't see Dan Patrick's name and you would have to put him in there. He got elected State Senator from his name recognition.

Airwave, I mentioned Dan in a previous post Re: Most recognized talk host in Houston? « Reply #4 on: May 05, 2006, 07:35:02 pm » Quote News or Sports? Past, present or both? Garfield comes across a bit too arrogant for my taste. Who appointed him the high tech Texan? Sounds like he spent his own cash to promote himself in the eyes of the public. Nothing wrong with that, but it makes him a bit ingenuous Often times he comes across as that geeky know it all that you still want to beat up after class.
