Most underrated station in Providence

Is there a great Providence station who you feel doesn't get the attention it deserves? My vote goes to WSTL Shine 1220. http://www.shineradio.us In my opinion it's like a hidden Gem. Nobody talks about it. It's pretty much off the radar as far as most people are concerned. But man oh man.... they've got a great mix of music and the station has an upbeat positive attitude. Whenever I tune them in it's really enjoyable to listen to them. They are a Christian broadcast station, but it's not anything like you would expect to hear from that format. It's really worth a listen. I don't know how good the signal is, but they have a High Quality stream on their website. So give it a shot. You might be pleasantly surprised to hear a station that you may not have realized even existed!

I'll agree. I've listened while back at home. Good music mix, some local content, and nice imaging. A far cry from what the place was as WRIB....

Another vote for "Shine 1220" WSTL. They do a nice job of serving the segment of community it aims for (well......during the day, anyway), since night power drops to a "massive" 166 watts.

Should CC ever decide to spin off 920, the church that owns 1220 should waste no time in trying to snap it up.

I would also throw out a couple of "honorable mentions": One to WADK 1540 for giving listeners in Newport County the closest thing this market has to a traditional 'full-service' station. Second honorable mention to the U-Mass Dartmouth station on 89.3, for thier outstanding Jazz and Blues programming on Sundays.

Fianlly......Should anyone here decide to do a thread about "the station nobody would miss"?......I've already got a couple of candidates in mind! ;D

And to amplify a bit on WSTL:

The low night power happens when you're a US Class D AM on a foreign clear. 1220 is a Mexican clear that Canada also uses. I'm thinking that XEB Mexico City would be 'STL's limiting station. Here in Philly, my WVCH needs to drop to 6 watts to protect the 740 in Toronto, now CFZM. That station puts 50 kW into a half-wave tower at 740, and get a monster night signal. Most nights, it's entertainment quality here at home in Oreland, PA(about 12 miles N of Philly). The other station I work at, WNWR 1540, is limited not by WDCD in Albany, but by KXEL Waterloo IA.

WHKW Cleveland actually seems to be the most commonly heard station on 1220 around here at night. I haven't really tried recently though, since they switched to religious programming. A few years ago it was WKNR with sports, and I believe they had the Indians games for a while.

J,

Thanks for the reminder. I remember 1220 Cleveland as WGAR. The station has a 5 tower array that puts a deep null toward Mexico City, protecting XEB.

The problem with stations like this even if the music is better than you expect it to be is that for most listeners it's totally unfamiliar music and the station will never win over any new fans. It's like someone suddenly discovering a new format he's never heard before and listening to nothing but songs he's never heard before. If that were a realistic scenario there are better formats I'd like to see make a go at it like AAA or a deeper cut classic rocker.

Not Providence, but with a signal that covers pretty much entire RI (and some SE Mass) very surprisingly well, 90.3 WRIU out of URI is always good for some underground urban music, they usually have a great mixshow in the afternoons 3-6. As well as other programming that's pretty cutting edge.
