I happened to be driving home from an overtime job in Cleveland on Tuesday 11/16/21. I chanced to press my preset for AM1260, WCCR, which runs programming from the largest Catholic radio network in the world, EWTN, which was founded by Mother Angelica who, for decades, did television talk shows. In their Global Catholic Radio Network, they re-run the audio from her television shows.
On Tuesday evening, between 8:00 and 9:00pm, they were broadcasting one of their “Mother Angelica – Classics” shows. The reason it is noteworthy here is because she was on a comedy roll, and the in-studio audience was laughing it up, big time. Mother Angelica was making jokes about her, supposed, lack of understanding of sports. The two best jokes were about football and golf.
FOOTBALL: She said she had a hard time understanding what was going on sometimes. She said she sees a guy running with the ball, and somebody trips him up or tackles him, but then a whole bunch of other guys pile on top of him. Why do they do that, she asked. The guy with the ball isn’t going anywhere.
GOLF: She noted how the players hit the ball with the golf club, and then keep doing that again and again until it falls into an itty-bitty hole. Mother Angelica quipped that after a couple of times of hitting the ball, she’d just pick up the ball and put it in the hole herself.
After she was done telling these jokes, she effortlessly went into a prayer for a little boy who was ill. I can see why people enjoy(ed) listening to Mother Angelica. She can be fun, on occasion, and her warm delivery and positive messages make her show a pleasant listen.
