MOTHER TRUCKER HD-2 IS COMING

In Fresno, 1027 HD-2 will be called MOTHER TRUCKER - Southern
Rock and Country Outlaws.

Why?

Take a few minutes the next time you're out, standing in line for a movie, or at some club, and ask people around you if they know about HD radio. Do they know what it is? How to get it? Where to get it?

No, no and no.

Listeners don't want to carry around another device, so unless the HD reciever is built-in to other components like in-car stereos and cell phones/PDAs...it means nothing, for now...because eventually all AM/FM radios will incorporate digital technology anyway.

Seeing as how no-one is listening to the flamethrower signal 102.7 KHGE right now, I think it is pretty much moot what they put on their HD2 channel. Look for a format flip soon. They haven't dented 93.7 KSKS in the country department and I don't expect to see them start doing so. Once again, Clear Channel flips a successful station(102.7 KALZ Hot AC) to go up against a heritage station and, once again, they absolutely screwed it up. It would be funny if it wasn't so bad for Radio to be doing such stupid things while other new media (i.e. Internet) are growing with leaps and bounds.

"Dude - Last trend 25-54 KSKS 4.1 and KHGE 2.2 (half) when KHGE went on KSKS was in the 6-7 shares 25-54. That's a baseball bat size ding in the hood."

Interesting. That's probably why they just fired their 7 month pregnant morning show host and completely dropped the idea of a morning show and went to just music.

And anyone in this business knows, or should know, that a "Trend" is worth about as much as a spot on KHGE.

Also, we measure success in the radio game by revenue generated. This is reported to Miller Kaplan. I believe Kiss was second place for revenue in the market again. Like they were last year, and the year before, and the year before, and the year before, and the year before. I know, it gets tiring just repeating it. The only station beating Kiss is their sister station KMJ. Where is KHGE? I don't bother to look past the top 15 reporting stations so I don't know.

You can't expect KHGE to be a top billing station already!! Come on dude. Yeah KSKS is heritage, they've been in the market years, understandable they are a top billing station. Your argument makes no sense what so ever. "Also, we measure success in the radio game by revenue generated. This is reported to Miller Kaplan. Takes time dude. With the ratings (Jimmy was right) KHGE has taken a ton away from KSKS, they are a little butt hurt right now. KSKS is keeping strong right now because they are heritage, but just watch, those numbers will level out. I see KHGE and KSKS in a dead heat in a year or so. No listener likes KSKS that much that they are going to sit through a commercial break, they switch back and forth. Anyone who thinks otherwise is totally insane.

I'm willing to bet KHGE will be bringing in a new morning show before the 1st of the year. Going all music in the mornings will never bring in the ratings as a LIVE local morning show. This was just an easy out to get rid of Athena.

Churchillis, appreciate your opinions, but really doesn't mean much coming from a board op. Educate yourself a bit on your own, don't just listen what your friend Athena and the KSKS pd are telling you.

Ha! Classic. Same excuses from an underachieving company. KWYE flipped formats in December and they are already billing more than KHGE. What is your answer for that? KFJK is the same age as KHGE and is a top 7 Miller Kaplan performer. Educate yourself before you start making excuses for failure.
As to my argument not making sense, KHGE has been in the market in this format for over 18 months. How much time do you think is excusable for a station to underperform on a stick that powerful? Hell, crappy signal KFYE (Remember, Porn Radio) pulls a .9 share in Adults 25-54 and their signal is so weak they sell walkie talkies at Best Buy with more juice.
I'll one up you. Not only will KHGE not bring in a morning show by the end of the year, they will have changed formats by then.
Face it, you only get one year in this business to prove you are a sustainable station or not. Even board ops, which I most certainly am not, know that. Go back to your overnight roamer gig and keep making excuses for your stations performance.

Keep this thread for your "I should have listened to someone smarter than me" file for when KHGE flips formats.

It's understandable you and everyone else over at KSKS are little upset about losing HALF your share of 25-54 to KHGE. With KSKS and KHGE the only two country stations in town, highly doubt a format switch. First of all, Clear Channel hasn't sunk too much money into that station. With no morning show, and out of town voice-trackers on most day-parts, it really shouldn't be costing much to run that station. In turn, no need to be billing all that much right now.

So as long as the station isn't losing money, don't expect to hear anything but country on 102.7fm. Your nightmare that is KHGE countinous on! If your butt is puckerin' now, I'm sure it's gonna get worse. KHGE is proving they can compete with KSKS (even without a morning show and voicetrackers). I've got a feeling CC might pony up the money for LIVE talent on all dayparts this Fall.

But as a former CC employee, I know how CHEAP CC is, and wouldn't put it past them to not give KHGE any money and just let them suffer and die. But we'll see.

But speaking of format switch; what format holes does Fresno have? Anything that CC can put on that frequency that would succeed?

Don't misunderstand me. I am not upset with KHGE. I am actually happy they are helping keep someone out of putting a country station on the air that could really compete.
As for which format hole they could plug into that stick, there isn't a whole lot not being done right now. The right move would have been never moving KALZ off the dial down to 96.7. KALZ was always a top 5 performer 25-54. If they weren't selling it well, the sales staff should have been let go. Since the dial move, neither KALZ nor KHGE have made it into the top 5 for Adults 25-54. At this point, they could try and take on KMGV as the exclusive oldies format in Fresno, or program a Jack format to compete with KFJK. However, we have already seen how well they can take on an established station.
Honestly, don't be suprised to see Fresno Clear Channel show up on a list of clusters CC is selling off. They have 9 stations and have never managed to break 35% of the revenue for radio in the market. KSOF is the solitary station performaing well with both ratings and revenue. And with the format flip for KWYE this year, expect that to change soon.
As for KHGE, like I said, a year and a half is enough time to see a lot better results in both the ratings and revenue departments. They are DOA. It's a still-born baby. Toss it.
