Motown Records...How they did it in the 60's!

One of the things that attracted me to multitrack production was watching an "old dog" produce nightclub spots in the early 70's. He used two Scully full track tape machines, and bounced between the two a few times, adding music, and effects..back and forth between two reel to reel tape decks..Amazing! Little did I know then that the music industry's famous MOTOWN records was doing it the same way! All of those Supremes, and Temptations records that you STILL hear on some oldies stations were done on THREE TRACKS! I thought all record companies had been multitracking masters for thier hits for years..but this article about Larry Horn..one of Motown's top engineers..shows a glimpse of what things were like in the pre-digital days..Interesting little article:
