Movie "Ray" on CMT

Tonight I noticed CMT was showing the movie "Ray" which is about Ray Charles which is played by actor Jamie Foxx. Should CMT be airing this movie? I feel it should be on BET instead.

I'd agree. However Ray Charles' "Born to Lose", "Ruby" & "I Can't Stop Loving You" can lean country. Didn't he perform with country singers?

(BTW what about "that other Ray Charles", as in the Ray Charles Singers....talk about second fiddle!) :)

cd

In 1962, Ray recorded two classic albums for ABC Paramount: Modern Sounds in Country & Western Volume 1 and 2. His records with ABC allowed him to make the music HE wanted to make. In his autobiography, "Ray," he writes that first and foremost, he's a country boy from Albany Georgia. Country music is in his soul. He proved it on these two albums. Most focus on "I Can't Stop Lovin' You," since it was a #1 pop hit, but my personal favorite from this album is his version of Eddy Arnold's "You Don't Know Me." I like his version over Eddy's. It went to #2 on the Billboard pop charts. The making of these two albums is seen in the movie.

Ray's actual country career came in the 80s with an album called "Friendship," and a series of duets that charted country. The best known is his duet with Willie Nelson called Seven Spanish Angels. It was a #1 country song, but he had 8 country hits in the 80s.

His influence in country music can be heard in the music of Travis Tritt. Before he died, Ray did a Crossroads with Travis that aired on CMT.

BET doesn't have time, they're showing "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" all this week.

:D ;)

I had the same discussion with a family member. They couldn't understand it on CMT either.

It's a remake, with Paris Hilton as the lead whore.

It actually has aired on BET, FWIW--several times.

Leave out Ray Charles' country music exploits for a moment: Given how CMT often aired movies that carry rural or Southern settings/themes, clearing Ray works on that level as well. You could get away with running the movie on VH1 fairly easily--MTV if you're feeling particularly daring.

The Jacksons: An American Dream has filled a lot of time this way too, sans CMT.

How soon before CMT starts airing "Designing Women" reruns? (Remember when Ray himself actually appeared on the show's intro performing the theme song, piano and all?)

This is nothing new. CMT's gone the Syfy route, as many other cable channels have, unfortunately. CMT has aired National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and Married...With Children in the past; just this week, they're airing MTV Cribs and the 1986 comedy film Ruthless People.
