There was also a short-lived TV version with a mostly-black cast, "The New Odd Couple" from 1982, which starred Demond Wilson and Ron Glass as Oscar and Felix, respectively.

> Peyton Place
> Movie: Troy Donahue ?

Lana Turner was also one of the stars.

> TV: Ryan O'Neal

Other TV cast members included Mia Farrow, Mariette Hartley, Leslie Nielsen and Lee Grant. Of those stated above, only Ryan O'Neal was on the entire series.

NBC later brought the soap back as an all-new daytime entry, "Return To Peyton Place", which was seen from April 1972 to January 1974.

A relative unknown, Sammy Jackson. And it was on ABC during the 1964-1965 season.

> Planet of the Apes
> Movie: Charleton Heston, Roddy McDowell
> TV: James Naughton

Roddy McDowell also starred in the TV series.

There was also a 1966 "Batman" theatrical feature that was released simultaneously with the TV series, with the same stars (except for Catwoman, who was played by Lee Meriwether in the film).

> The Lone Ranger
> TV: Clayton Moore
> Movie: ?

Two theatrical features were released in 1956 and 1958, with Clayton Moore playing The Lone Ranger and Jay Silverheels reprising his role as Tonto.

Of course, there were also, I think, theatrical serials that predated the TV series.

But we shouldn't forget (or maybe we should) the 1981 feature "The Legend Of The Lone Ranger", which starred unknowns Klinton Spilsbury and Michael Horse and the Ranger and Tonto, respectively. Christopher Lloyd and Jason Robaeds also appeared in lesser roles.

Leave It To Beaver was made into a movie in 1997 with a cast largely made up of unknowns. It flopped at the box office.

The Honeymooners are going to debut in movie theaters next week and I don't know how movie goers will feel about this movie.

I kind of know exactly how The Dukes Of Hazzard will go over in movie theaters looking at pictures of who plays Bo,Luke and Daisy, the original cast members are better. The actors look like Coy and Vance Duke from the 1982-1983 season than they do Bo and Luke Duke.

I wished that The Mod Squad would have done better at the box office. Claire Danes is another identifiable name.

There was another Dragnet TV series in 2002 which starred Ed O'Neill from Married With Children.

Other movies based on TV Shows.

Fat Albert
Rocky And Bullwinkle
My Favorite Martian
Dudley Do-Rite

Other TV shows based on movies:

Dangerous Minds
Down and Out in Beverly Hills
Harry and the Hendersons
Honey, I Shrunk the Kids
Men in Black: the Series (animated)
Swamp Thing (animated)

One more:

The "Police Academy" films, which were made into two TV series (one animated, one live-action, both flops).

And in TV-to-movie, lest we forget "Police Squad", a short-lived TV series that spawned three successful "Naked Gun" films and a career shift for Leslie Nielsen from drama to comedy.
Edited by rugrats1 on 06/01/05 04:47 PM.

How about "Code Red" - the tv series about the LA fire dept. I can't remember if the movie or tv series came first.

I'm not familiar with that one...I can think of some more, what about SNL skits & characters that were made into movies:

The Blues Brothers
The Blues Brothers 2000
Wayne's World 1 & 2
The Ladies' Man
Coneheads
Stuart Saves His Family
Mr. Mike's Mondo Video
Superstar
A Night at the Roxbury
It's Pat

...interesting that nobody's yet mentioned the movie/TV sitcom OPERATION PETTICOAT; the movie co-starred Tony Curtis, whose daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis, was a supporting player on the ABC late '70s sitcom...

...anyone ready to allow "The Ed Sullivan Show"/I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND, or "The Monkees"/HEAD?...

...and then there's the only game show to cross from TV to movies: "The Gong Show"/THE GONG SHOW MOVIE...
______________

A particularly bad movie to TV transfer was "My Big Fat Greek Wedding(Life)". The TV show was a disaster.

With Dragnet there was also a movie from the 60's with Jack Webb and Harry Morgan. I don't know if it was made for TV or theatrical, but I've seen AMC play it and once they ran intros by mistake like it was going to be the Dan Aykroyd / Tom Hanks comedy remake, but it turned out to be the one from the 60's instead. And on the TV side there was also the remake with Ed O'Neill a few years back that was later called LA Dragnet. In looking at IMDB I also found out that there was a cable version on USA in 1989 and 1990 called Dragnet - the 90's. I never heard of that one before.

With Twilight Zone on TV there was also the 80's version on CBS and in syndication, and the current version that started on UPN but is now in syndicatation with Forrest Whitaker.

There was also a short run Back to the Future cartoon series.

The actual title was "The New Dragnet", which was only in production for about a year or two. The show was releasd in tandem with another revival -- "The New Adam-12".

The show was on USA and in syndication in the early-1990s, but was first seen exclusively on WWOR in New York and KCOP in Los Angeles in 1989 before going wide.

Here's a few more:

Bagdad Cafe
Movie: CCH Pounder
TV: Jean Stapleton, Whoopi Goldberg

Party Girl
Movie: Parker Posey
TV: Christine Taylor

Josie & The Pussycats
TV:[Voices of] Cheryl Ladd, Casey Casem
Movie: Rosario Dawson, Tara Reid, Rachel Leigh Cook

Get Smart
TV: Don Adams
Movie("The Naked Bomb"): Don Adams

Doctor Who
TV: William Hartnell, Tom Baker, Peter Davidson, Christopher Eccleston
Movie: Peter Cushing
[The 1996 TV Movie doesn't count because they picked up where the original series left off].

The Flintstones

The Flintstones..."A Man Named Flintstone" ( 1966 ) and "the Jetsons meet the Flintstones" ( 1990 ? ), may have been the other way around. Come to think of it there was "The Jetsons The Movie" that came out in the early 90's. I think the voice of George Jetson ( George O'hanlon ) died not long after the movie came out.

Then of course you had those two Flintstone live action movies that came out in the 90's. One has Liz Taylor in it playing Wilma's mother. That was a big deal back then. I think that was the first movie she made in years and to my knowledge the last one she has done.

The USA/WWOR Dragnet had unknowns playing the principal leads (none named Joe Friday)

Jeff Osterhage - Det. Vic Daniels
Thalmus Rasulala - Capt. Boltz
Don Stroud - Capt. Lussen-The only halfway recognizable name here
Bernard White - Carl Molina

Dragnet was also made into a color feature film in 1954.

"The Jetsons Meet The Flintstones" was a made-for-TV movie that came out in 1987-88, and it was one of the last vocal performances of Daws Butler (Elroy), he died in 1988. The movie aired on the Boomerang channel on Monday afternoon.
