MOVIN 107.5.....

I wanted MOViN, but not at the expense of The Oasis...... ???

From All Access:

KOAI Dumps Smooth Jazz For 'MOViN'
At 5p (CT) CBS spun the format wheel at longtime Smooth Jazz KOAI (107.5 THE OASIS)/DALLAS in favor of a new Rhythmic AC direction as MOViN 107.5.

Details are still coming in, but ALL ACCESS understands that AC sister KVIL (103.7 LITE FM) PD NIKKI NITE will take over as the PD from CHARLEY CONNOLLY. More on this breaking story, soon.

Make sense that Nikki would be over 107.5 now, to make sure KVIL and Movin' are not programming against each other. This may be the way to offload some of the R&B and such from KVIL, so it can move in its long-predicted direction towards pop-country crossover and Christian (a la KLTY.) That format is Nikki's forte.

Yeah I know what you mean, when I heard about this and I was speechless and mind boggled, also upset as well. They were the only station that was worth listening since the other stations in DFW sound like crap.

I don't understand why CBS didn't flip either 100.3 or 105.3 to Rhythmic AC which are both the lowest rated stations if you look at arbitron ratings. I know a lot of people who are loyal listeners of The Oasis are really going to pissed over this change, I know I am

I guess the only way Smooth Jazz will ever come back to the DFW airwaves it will probably go on some rimshot signal that doesn't cover the whole market or it will be on an HD-2 channel and you'll have to purchase an HD radio to listen, because I can't really see anyone flipping to the format in this market but only time will tell.

GUYS GET A GRIP, YOU BETTER BE GLAD WE HAVE A STATION LIKE THIS HERE, BECAUSE THE CLUB SCENE IS REAL POPULAR AROUND HERE

I can't say that I'm completely surprised, as things were getting to a point that the music there was becoming about 1/2 ~/= smooth jazz, the other half non (mostly R&B, but they wouldn't have admitted it).

Oh, well. At least there's KNTU (most of the time), XM Real Jazz (thru my D* dish), and WBGO in Newark (streaming on the Web). IF we get any jazz (smooth or otherwise) acts coming thru town to play anytime soon, they'll have to promote themselves somehow without a local radio tie-in.

In my hometown of louisville they got rid of smooth jazz in august of 2005 in favor of the jack type format jack.I know jack is so yesterday the flavor of the day is movin
but louisville has tried a smooth jazz type station for years on and off and it always goes away i guess like adult standards pretty soon it will be non existent. The suits win always!

Well another place you can find Smooth Jazz on-line is Art Goode's JazzTrax.com website.
He has streaming audio with NO commercials.

I loved listening to The Oasis, but I do miss some of the stuff they used to play when they first started,
such as Level 42's song, "Sleepwalking" and Horizont. Can't remember the exact name of the song by Horizont but I have the CD. They also played some very cool "Chet Atkins" jazz years ago as well.

Granted, some of their stuff, such as Gerry Rafferty, I would not consider smooth jazz.

Guess it is time to buy an FM transmitter for my Ipod !! :)

You mean the original incarnation on 106.1 or version 2.0 on 107.5? The just departed KOAI was a far cry from what was originally programmed in 1987, when it was fresh and unique. Sure miss that format, but I'll be the first to admit that most people didn't understand it, thus all the mutation.

If our own Smooth Jazz KHJZ (also CBS Radio) here in Houston is any indication, the format has gotten repetitive and rather stale. I used to enjoy it, but can only take it in small doses now.

Have anybody noticed how CBS haven't even put up a website for MOViN? All the other stations that flipped to that format, immediately put up a website. Another thing I noticed is that 107.5 drops don't sound like the drops on the other MOViN stations. Also, even though they suppose to focus on just the 80's through today, 107.5 have been playing some songs from the 70's. Finally, why is The Oasis website still up?.....

I can't believe they are playing, "Best of my Love" by The Emotions from 1977.

Oh yeah Movin' 93.9 LA also has played it. Have ya heard Earth Wind & Fire and/or Rick James yet? Any Michael Jackson?

All these companies screwing up changing to formats of the month are just running off more people to INTERNET RADIO where i'm beginning to hear CONSISTANCY with Music and even Jocks!

Of course the good jocks will eventually get out because of all the nuttiness going on.

MediaFrog,

I listened to The Oasis when it was on 106.1 and 107.5.

Yes, you are absolutely correct, 106.1 The Oasis took more chances and played some EXTREMELY
cool jazz music that 107.5 wouldn't dare play. Yet some of the stuff 107.5 played to me, is not smooth
jazz at all. I'm not a huge Kenny G fan at all, but I also don't think Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" qualifies
as smooth jazz either............

The Wave, KHJZ down in Houston is almost a carbon-copy of The Oasis in Dallas. Even the same announcer guy doing all the promos..............so when I am in Houston, I'd almost feel like I was in Dallas. :)

It truly is a shame to see this station go down the tubes.

To heck with CBS radio !!

The Oasis circa late 80's early 90's was a very good station. R&B based and the Audio quality was superb.

Wasn't The Oasis started (somewhat) because of the success of KTWV (The Wave) in LA? The New Age 'wave' was happening back then and crept into commercial radio in some areas. If I remember correctly The Oasis was jazzier than The Wave.

Sad to hear that the Oasis has dried up :(

Until yesterday I always thought CBS was the lesser of two evils when compared to Clear Channel (not to say any of the other networks are doing a better job) but I must say CBS management made a bad mistake in flipping the Oasis. Today, while at work it was the office buzz (I don't work in broadcasting but have a strange interest), lots of people discussing the end of the Oasis. It also got me thinking about all the business I would visit and hear the Oasis on the house radio. They're ratings couldn't be that bad could they? Thank god for my Sirius.

Clear Channel management, are you paying attention?

Me thinks not. Prove me wrong.

I agree with the poster talkin about Kenny G and Gerry Rafferty....that's not jazz. As much as people bitch & moan here about cookie cutter radio, 90% of the Smooth Jazz stations in the country are exactly the same....and just a step up form Muzak.

No, they pulled a 3.0 in the last ratings which is good. They were always in or near the top ten stations. They were ahead of their CBS siblings KVIL (sucks!!!!!!!!!!), KLLI (Live/Free FM) & JACK (tired format). The only station CBS had better than the Oasis was K-LUV and they only pulled a 3.7. It makes no sense. Brian Purdy's secretary said that the only way to make a difference and change CBS'mind about market research is to call HIM!

12+ will not work for a sales analysis. The important analysis is 25-54.

Looking at the last 10 books in this demo, KOAI has slipped (albeit erratically) from a mid-3 range to a mid-2 range, having showed between 16th and 20th in the demo of recent in full books, well our of the "depth" that transactional buyers go to select stations.

KVIL bottomed in the low 2's last year, and is now above a 4 share, and KLUV is also way ahead of WOAI in the demo. In sales, both KVIL and KLUV are nearly doubling WOAI in revenue.

KLLI is a new talk format, and talkers take time (and lots of money) but it is already ahead of KOAI in 25-54, although its (irrelevant) 12+ may not be. It is also making sales gains, something that can not be said for KOAI.

I would guess this and a variety of other forward thinking considerations entered into the decision.

It is interesting to note that while CBS did this in Dallas, Clear Channel flipped a Hurban in Albuquerque to Smooth Jazz. Of course, Clear owns Broadcast Arcitecture, the smooth jazz consultancy that Frank Cody and Owen Leach founded 20 years ago after the success of The Wave in LA... making them likely to be more friendly to the format.
