Thanks for the compliment, but I have to defend Emmis. In general, they are good radio folks, with a real programmer heading the radio division.
I used to respect Emmis, but they seem to have made some
really boneheaded moves in recent years:
--Signing an irrelevant has-been such as Rick Dees to a large contract
--Canning Country in L.A. because its appeal is not wide enough, and then replacing it with a format whose target audience is seemingly indeterminable! I keep reading they want Hispanic females, but if that's the case, why do they have an old white guy on a station that spins primarily African American artists?
--Firing a well-established morning jock in Chicago right after he scored a #1 book in Men 25-54. Great move.
--Going thru 3 programmers within a period of several years at this same Chicago station, each one getting lower ratings than his predecessor. Guess they decided it wasn't worth it. So what do they do? They eliminated the PD/OM position altogether. :
--Their Classic Rock station in Chicago gets spanked by the Classic Rock station that's owned by a bunch of Mormons in both ratings & billing. They have such talented programmers in the building at Emmis. Oh, that's right...they eliminated the position of PD in Chicago. Nevermind. The corporate programmers from St. Louis and dopey consultants from Detroit know better, I guess.
--Remember when they replaced the WENS brand in Indy with a Hot AC/chick talk hybrid known as "Real Radio 97-1" ? That worked REALLY well...LMAO! To Emmis' credit, they did kill off this abortion of a station and replaced it with a newly developed Country brand that has proven moderately successful.
--Red @ 104.1 in St. Louis. DUMBEST. CONCEPT. EVER!!!!
--Briefly dumping Smooth Jazz on CD 101.9 in New York for "Chill" music. Another brilliant move.
--Do I even need to go into the incidents that have occurred at Hot 97 over the past few years?
They clearly have GUTS, but do they have brains? Sure doesn't look like it to me. They can't even handle the small number of stations they already own. It's probably a good thing they didn't get the former ABC stations.
