MOVIN' DOWN

Anybody here ever beat Dees?

Yeah, I think there may be several here as PDs or GMs who have beaten him on pure ranker based evaluation.

Can't wait to hear from them. I'll add, anybody here got a better history in LA than Rick?
I'll try not to hold my breath on that one either.

You're missing the point. Without attempting to speak for anyone else, I think most people would agree that in his heyday, Dees did great things. But what he's doing now isn't working. You asked a couple of posts ago if anyone's ever beaten him; the sad truth is that currently, almost everyone is beating him.

And my point was that, while Dees may be in a no win situation now, you certainly can't call him a loser. That's like calling Magic Johnson a loser because he wasn't the same player when he came back that he was in the Showtime era.
Dees is still one of the all time greats in this business and has left a stamp that won't go away. Hey, ask Kidd Kraddick in Dallas, a total Dees clone, albeit with much less talent.

"...Dees may be in a no win situation now..."
Excuse me, but unless I've missed something, his company has spent MILLIONS of dollars on outdoor, television, and every other possible form of promotion you can think of. The free publicity from print articles in the LA Times and other dailies is more than many more-successful stations get in a year. Did someone drug him and force him to do this? Did he have no say in his format, in his on-air sidekicks, in the content of his show..in whether he returned at all? You've absolved him of all responsibility for the success or failure of his broadcast.

NOt in the least. I'm saying that you don't call Dees a loser because of Movin. No matter what Movin does, Dees remains one of the all time greats.

I think Dees would have better served himself (and thus his place in radio history) had he re-entered the LA market on a station that was compatible formatically to who he could have expected to draw. Oldies, for example. Or a soft/medium AC. Maybe even country. But your Magic Johnson analogy might better have been the Michael Jordan switching to baseball story. Didn't kill his reputation...but certainly didn't enhance it.

Dees was arguably the top air personality in the nation for most of the eighties until KPWR came along in 1986 and replaced KIIS at #1 after less than a year in existence.

By the time CC fired him, he was eighth in the market in morning drive.

He will certainly go down as one of the finest morning drive personalities in the history of this market, and certainly North American radio.

The music and the rest of the air talent at MOVIN' aren't his fault either.

If the two previous posts were accurate, then the station would have great morning ratings and nothing the rest of the day. For reference, note Howard Stern's historical ratings on KROCK/NY...sky high in mornings and then mediocre after 10am. Or look at Dodgers nighttime ratings on KFWB vs. the rest of the day. All I'm saying is that good radio will find an audience...people know where to look-- even on bad radio stations.

since KBIG imploded I have been listening to KMVN at work..

I think Dees problem is that is sounds like he broadcasting to children. What is the average listener age for KMVN again? Im pretty sure it wasnt 12

just my 2 cents

I don't know about Movin anymore. Since KBIG went off the air, the station should just call itself La's Old school with some of today's top 40 hits. The station sounds so boring to me now. They cut out all the classic dance, even in the mixes. Its all disco, old school and little top 40. Most of the dance/house/remix music is gone. They even got rid of the friday fiesta mix. I don't see movin staying around for long. So what do you think is next for them? Do you think their subchannel will come into the main 93.9?

Dees did not set the world on fire at KHJ: I think the station makes Dees - Dees does not make the station.
