MOVIN' GOES SPANISH POP!

According to the website Radionotas:

[EDIT]

"It appears...that my fellow....programmers of regional Mexican radio in Los Angeles won't have competition, because the new station that Grupo Radio Centro acquired will be contemporary "POP" and will be "Exitos 93.9." I want you to know that we needed another station of this format, because we're up to our ears with "grupera" stations, only hoping that my dead Gabriel Roa doesn't change his mind and surprise us....with a grupera format..."

From SuRadito! May give KISS/AMP/KXOL some competition?

[EDIT-English language only please]

It was too late to edit, meant to write "dear" not "dead."

I think this was probably a smart move from GRC, considering the regional Mexican saturation in the market. Should be interesting to hear their playlist.

Both Super Estrella and Latino will be the ones in trouble, not KIIS nor AMP. Super Estrella might as well go away today with their ratings. As for Latino, not good timing for them to have any competition, including AMP, since the rumor of their exchange with NBC for KWHY is still warm.

Good call by Grupo Radio Centro. Especially since Superestrella is going away soon. Another "grupera" "banda" "norteña" station is not needed in the market. We're already saturated with: La Nueva 101.9, KBUE, KLAX, 97.5 plays some grupera, El Gato 103.1.

Hopefully that deal between SBS and NBC/Telemundo goes down. KWHY 22 would become part of Mega TV out of Miami.

KSSE has been considering moving or adding Gato, the KDLD format, to 107.1. KDLD/E with only about 20% market coverage with a usable signal gets around a 1.5... simple math, and it is over a 4 share on a decent signal like KSSE.

Hey David I found it odd that I was listening to KSPN (710) and they are running a spanish "Midas" spot. I digress. "El Gato" makes much more sense on 107.1. Entravision will probably run a simulcast as they did with 97.5/103.1. a few years back.

My original post got bumped for copying the verbage from Radionotas. I guess the editor doesn't like to have source material posted here. Oh well!

"Exitos" (93.9), means "MOViN" in english!!!! :D

No it doesn't. It means literally "success" or idiomatically translated to mean "hits."

So if 93.9 later decides to trim their playlist and become a Spanish Hot Hits format, would it become "Exitos Caliente?"

Add an "s" to "Calientes" and you would technically be right, but I think that is the intention of GRC from the get go.

If Entravision moves El Gato to 107.1, why bother with a simulcast on 103.1? Why not either launch a new format there, or just sell KDLD and KDLE? Do they really need it?

Well..... it would probably be good to get an Exitos station here in Az. Maybe I wont listen to it much, but that doesn't mean we don't need it. We are currently without a top 40 spanish right now. We have a Latin Rhythm, but no Spanish top 40. I remember Que Buena from the 90's. They disappeared. I remember Que Viva for a while in early 2000. They disappeared. I remember Super Estrella popped up where Que Buena was and sounded like a modernized identity of Que Buena. They recently disappeared. So, is it safe to assume that maybe a spanish top 40 cannot survive in this market with a latin rhythm format? At first, I didn't think it would be too much of a problem. I'd like to get a spanish top 40 back in Phoenix and see KVIB go more spanish pop urbano once again, but I guess with all the rhythmics we have now, KVIB couldn't do this again today, and as a result, a spanish top 40 could hurt them.... unless reggaeton somehow mysteriously manages to make a massive come back very quick. If a spanish hits station and a latin rhythm format cannot work in LA, then it most likely wouldn't work well all together here in Phoenix either.

Good choice for that format. When I was in LA, the only Spanish stations that I can tolerate is K-Love 107.5 and Super Estrella 107.1. I wont count Latino 96.3 since most of their songs are in English.

Superestrella and Viva were not Top 40 stations... they were more Hot AC, with fairly large playlists and lots of gold, some going back 15 to 20 years.

But whatever it is, it does not work in PHX and has not worked in LA for some time (and then only a 2.5 at the most). If the now authorized sale of KVIB goes through, you will have a Que Buena with hardcore regional Mexican music, just like Liberman does on his first station in any market.
