What I don't quite understand is why Emmis didn't hire major market talent to fill out the schedule from the start. There is no shortage of jocks that are out of work in the LA and surrounding areas that would sound great on Movin'. I know that everyone says it was a money issue, but they eventually started to hire people. I just feel that by then it was too late. If they didn’t have the bucks, why bother? Guess they over estimated Rick Dees ability to bring the audience in. But even if they sampled, they didn’t stay because of the product after morning drive.
If they really had all their ducks in order when the format was flipped, had promotions ready, plus billboards and TV spots heavily blanketing the city and airwaves they may have had a chance. But I also think that the format itself still would be a tough sell. Just not a big enough hole to fill. The old rule is, find a hole and fill it. If you're going to do a format that's already in place, wouldn't it have made sense to go after one that has a bigger slice of the pie? Just thinking... As for Dees, I have to agree, his style isn't dead, but he needs to re-tool the people surrounding him. They can still do the bi-lingual thing, just find good people...
