Movin... It's Here. Life Goes On

I am usually just a reader here, but I find something very hypocritical. A week or less ago, there were a bunch of posts saying how good it would be to have a station like Movin in the market. Of course there were the usual suggestions on what station to flip and why, but in the end we don't know what led up to this decision. I highly doubt that one day, Kurt, Brian or anyone else in CBS management just decided, "hey, lets draw straws to see which station flips to Movin", or "Smooth Jazz puts me to sleep, lets get rid of it." Instead, they probably looked at it logically from many different angles. Who isn't billing enough? Does this station have the potential to bill more? How do the ratings in the demo look (Not just 12+). Let's face it, even though corporate radio has dulled down the product immenesly over the years, a station STILL needs to make money. This is something that EVERY station has to do, whether it be owned by Clear Channel, CBS, mom & pop, you or I. Think about it from this point: If you owned a radio station and spent hundreds, thousands, millions of dollars on it, and you were not making your money back, you would probably change something, even IF you were having fun. Just like you would not invest in a company's stock if it wasn't doing well, had no signs of ever doing well, even if you LOVED their product. I am positive that this was not an overnight decsion, and most likely was well researched.

Truth be told, not many people have ALL of the information that was put in to this decsion. We can speculate, guess and give our opinions, but we really just don't know.
Can we just be happy that we got the Movin' station we asked for earlier? I for one am! It is a breath of fresh air, and has a lot of potential. (Whether the decision to flip the Oasis was right or not.)

Flame if you wish, just my two cents.

Man, I agree, these people need to let it go. You can't yell in the radio to tell these guys they made a mistake. My advice to these guys. Let it go!!

You're probably right. I doubt they drew straws. But that's not the point, is it? What we on this board enjoy doing (and we do it with ease) is poking fun at CBS' Dallas management. They're just not good at radio. It's embarrassing, really.

MOViN could be a successful format in Dallas. I won't rule out that possibility.

But so could JACK. So could Lite-FM. So could a blowtorch news-talker like KRLD. Yet they all underperform. The current group of CBS-Dallas managers has nothing to show for the 4 or 5 years they've had the wheel (except for some brief flashes of billboard-driven sampling that evaporated within a trend or two).

There is a silver lining: Some of the young pups who are coming up in the business right now can learn from these guys how not to do radio! And that, my friends, may turn out to be a blessing for future Dallas radio listeners.

Very true or the "young Pups" could be taught wrong with no vets around, thus maintaining the mediocrity.

I am what you may call a "young pup" but, I still have a great passion for radio (even though I am not in it at this very moment but plan to be back in it sooner rather than later). I don't settle for anything less than the best, and I know alot of people who are of the same mindset. It may take a while, but the us youngins will rise up to the top eventually!

If you have the passion for radio and not willing to settle for mediocrity homonginized liner reading. You will be radio's hope.

CBS -- The Believe their own advertising . . .

Your post says it all.....

Also, Lots of Money.... Lots of "Power".....

Absolute Power corrupts.... Absolutely.....

Works every time ! !

BTY Radio.... you keep alienating Baby-Boomers, and you think the "younger" hip generation is going to be able to pay your #@$&ing bills ? ? ? ?

Viacom/CBS and the whole MTV to whatever is is now, is their model.

Absolute power corrupts, absolutely !

Speaking of MTV, I can remember when they used to play videos !!

Same with VH1.

Now all it is is RAP CRAP more or less or "Pimp my Ride" shows............

Some people ACTUALLY like to just watch music videos............

My guess is the decision was made on the corporate, not local, level. CBS will switch several of their stations to MOVIN" just like they did with JACK a year or two ago. Just like JACK, MOVIN" will probably do it's best the first book or two and then go down from there. It might have some extra shelf life because they play a few currents/recurrents to keep things fresh.

WHAT A CONCEPT ! !

And to that, I'll add that, some people actually like to just listen to music --- regardless of the Genre --- that is --NOT-- Top Hits Oriented, ! ! ! !

I like the Movin format. I've havent changed the station on the radio since. I've gotten tired of the same 8 songs every hour and all the cRAP music.

I like Jack, but Jack didn't really replace a station that was well known.

Movin did.

Movin might be a great format, but it was put in place of a great radio station, so 107.5 is now deselected on my dial. And I am not alone in this.

Had this been done with warning, had the Oasis been sold and they put this in it's place, that might have been easier to take. But this is the actual owners doing this, and with no warning at all. So there you go.

I'm with you, Doctorclu, 107.5 is no longer on either of my FM banks of stations.

Time to get my FM adapter for my Ipod.

Apparently the memo has gone out to defend "Movin" Their version of the same "8" songs will become evident before the weekend is out.

Yeh create your own mini-FM station with that Ipod with a range of like 10 feet right? :)

There are lots of good stations on the dial in my opinion, and all are good for different reasons. I listen to 91.7 & 94.9 in the morning (devotional), 92.5 & 93.3, 100.3, 98.7 (rock or oldies) when working around the house. 102.9 & 103.7 (lite rock) sometimes when just chilling.

101 and 107.5 were the instrumental stations when I just needed to relax. The classical is sometimes good, but sometimes there is opera. Oasis had the instrumental jazz that balanced out the mix.

So for the latter category I now have KNON or WOR for occational instrumental, and sometimes KNON plays jazz.

And most of the time I actually listen to AM 770. It has some good music, but it's not too taxing (unless they are playing the flag waver's special), and the spirit of the station is fairly upbeat.

Yeh I have MP3 players and CD's, but hearing music on the radio, and getting some news and weather in between, really makes all the difference.

And even with nearly two weeks of continious music (seriously) on my laptop, I still realize that out on the radio I might hear music that I had not heard before. I will not learn new music in my own collection. So radio is still the best for me.

doctorclu,

Go to www.jazztrax.com

You can listen to a LOT of great smooth jazz that you would NEVER hear on The Oasis or any other smooth jazz format station, either.

I've got about two weeks of music on my Ipod as well and I've gotten tons of tunes after hearing one I really liked on Art Goode's website, JazzTrax. Plus, no commercials. It is great.
