MOViN : Now airing a disco show

PPM.

Numbers for rock stations in Philly and Houston went up immediatly after the method by Arbitron was introduced. And Philly and Houston are ethnic based too(Houston is heavily Spanish Speaking Latino like LA)

And while people like to talk about KNAC and KQLZ as failures, remember that both had "image" problems, Pirate had the hairband image which was a absolute no no in 1992 and KNAC was so far out there that no one took it seriously. I mentioned WYSP and KIOZ because both rock stations are more focused and more "hit based" as opposed to being seen as trend or looney based.

And rock might get at least a 2 on that signal if Emmis promotes it good, KMVN will never see above a 1.2 playing Disco, we have another station that plays a fair amount of disco, 92.3, and 104.3 still has Disco Saturday Night, and the market sees both as satisfying their Boogie oogie needs.

With 98.7 putting up billboards that say "Pearl Jam" and "Linkin Park" all over town, I think the active rock idea is already taken. (And I doubt it will work anyhow.) Ya, it's not a true active rock station, but it's close. Plus the kind of kid who listens to active rock groups (if he's listening to radio at all) is already listening to KROQ. You need a more working-class Anglo listenership to make Active rock work, and LA has little of that. That's why KCAL was (is?) out in San Berdoo, and also why Ozzfest touches down in Devore.

Frankly I don't think there is an easy answer to what 104.3, 93.9 and 98.7 should be. People's interests are so splintered, that attracting a large enough audience for any one format (that isn't already taken) is quite a challenge.

Whatever they do, I think they need to make radio more personable, organic, and local again, rather than try out these cookie-cutter fads like Jack (already fading) or Movin' or "104.3-the MySpace station-for-young-women-in-desirable-zip-codes-with-low-brand-loyalty." Whether it's Howard Stern or Vin Scully or Oprah or Kevin and Bean, over the long haul people respond to something with a voice and some originality.

Maybe Hillary will undo her husband's decision to consolidate radio in a few mega-corps, and restore some local creativity. But more likely, we'll have some new technology in our cars (such as easy internet access) that will make radio obsolete.

The PPM will do two things that will dramtically improve radio:

1/ Force programmmers to think like a tv network and find ways to get listeners to come back more often. That will result in on-air events instead the musical sausage they churn out everyday.
2/ Finally, radio will be able to attract and generate revenue from a male audience outside of talk radio . What kind of male listener was spending time filling out a "diary?" It wasn't the rock audience! With PPM, at least the non-AC male can be represented. Arbitron's methodology killed rock radio. LA is going to see dramatic shifts in listening.... and disco is not the answer.

You've got that right buddy.

Look, Mega Jamming oldies sound nice for one or two books, then people get tired of that crap. Look at Mega 100 and look at Hot 923 currently, one can only spin Oye Como Va so much and ride that wind for so long, why do you think CC abandoned Mega? Emmis is gonna find this out, and even Ricardo Diaz will get tired of playing Mega Oldies and bail(isn't that why he said he didn't wanna be at KRTH?)

At least with rock, they have a decent ninche to go about that might last, I ain't saying they'll get above a 2 and even my 2 estimate might be shaky, but a 0.9 playing More More More which has already been cooked is just utter nonsense. But it's Jimmy and Eman's station to program.

Some of the mixing of the disco oldies @ 5 PM during the week is just awful. I have a hard time believing I'm listening to a Los Angeles station. This station is playing K.C. & The Sunshine Band like K.C. was a current artist. It's horrible. Rick Dees should have gone to K-Earth. He would be a success now rather than facing his final job on L.A. radio. No one will ever hire him again after these ratings.
