Movin on nowhere

Let's start another stupid string about the fabulous Movin' format with this quote by it's creator at Insidradio.com;

"...founder Alan Burns gives this assessment: It’s neither an instant success nor a failure..."

Well I'm glad we are being specific!

Maybe I am wrong but most markets that it has launched in have not done that well right, again with the exception being Seattle?

how is Portland?
how is LA?
what other markets is the Burns format in?
can someone shed some light based on some numbers?

Portland, LA and SF never even got off the ground. LA spent a fortune and hired Rick Dees for mornings and has never broken a one share. Seattle launched strong at #2 18-34 and #2 25-54 women. One year later was half that number. It is number 4 18-34 on a four book or two book. That's about it. The station did a major talent shakeup to try and move things forward in December. They are more of a novelty station like 80's, Beat or Jack and agencies look at them that way. Seattle was really the only market where anyone checked the format out, but most quickly left.

Right on Dan. Station formats must be directed towards their specific demo and have focus....in this case the "plan" (or lack of one) never got executed. KQMV took MONTHS to get an AM show off the ground, then gutter-balled it and you can still hear the latest (oops, we failed - take 2) attempt....which leaves it lacking at the other key issue: Consistency. KQMV's inconsistent approach to what's on the air right now is exactly why people "heard, came and left" the station....all that money on promotion and the audience: GONE. All after only 3 books.

The saddest part of the Movin' experience: this idea had promise, but core fundamentals were not followed and just over a year later 1/2 their audience is now GONE. Morale at Marc's place must be at an all-time low.

The other stations in the country suffered even worse.

I'm sure Mama will enlighten me differently when she gets done cleaning the KQMV coffee/vending machine room. I remind her that "THE BOOK" doesn't lie....and the numbers really tell the story here.

thanks guys for the good insight. DJDAN we can always count on you for the real deal. So then if these numbers are what they are, around the country as well, I would think then it has been a failure then right?

Huh, wonder how Mr. Burns can think otherwise....OH that Mr.Burns, reminds me of that other "MR.BURNS" from the Simpsons.

The station is #4 in women 18-34, but has dropped to nothing almost everywhere else. If you look at past numbers, I would assume that ratings bonuses are NOT given based on women 18-34...they are given on books where they smashed the 25-54. Which has really never happened. I'm sure past and present airstaff are happy about that.

And forget Mamma. The bottom line is that the "shake-up" in December was a disgrace. They gave their first morning show 6 months to do absolutely nothing. So who knows if that show would've gone anywhere anyways. Monti and Brooke are hard on the ears, even for women. Their "revolutionary" idea isn't going to take them to any other market. Maynard is a PD that tracks his midday shift. What else is new...welcome to every other station in the country. Susan isn't fetching enough to keep me tuned in during drive time...she's a past weekender with her first gig. And DJ Kaz seems like he could do more. Maybe he's not allowed to? It seems to be a complaint on this board.

Bad airstaff, bad execution, bad idea. The format could've been something great. Who knows where it went wrong.

When you look at what its main competitor, KUBE, and compare what the two stations do, it's very obvious. KUBE does the things between the records and outside of the studio right. It's not all about the best music anymore.

Movin' still has the potential of keeping and increasing its place in the market, but it's unlikely they will tap into that potential. The ball is clearly in their court to take things to the next level.

Still, they're doing a lot better than the last year or two as KLSY.
