Movin on

An open letter to all General Managers thinking of switching to the “Movin” format:

Many of the “Movin” formats are being consulted by Guy Zapoleon who is fairly knowledgeable about the format. However be warned ahead of time!!!!

MARK ST.JOHN doesn’t know squat about dance music.

He’s a lily white programmer who only understands top 40 rock and mainstream white bred music usually aimed at men. His only claim to fame is discovering Mark and Brian which he will remind you of every 10 minutes. What has he done in the past decade? Well he couldn’t find a job in programming after a series of disaster programming stints in the 90’s and so like most FAILED programmers became a consultant and hooked up with his pal Guy Zapoleon.

While MARK ST.JOHN was playing his rock stiffs in the late 80’s and 90’s the Hot Rhythmic sound passed him by. Now with his little understanding of Dance/R&B/POP do you really want to take a chance with MARK ST.JOHN of Guy Zapoleon Media Consulting?

If you want programmers who understand and know the music, and understand the people who listen to it and can assemble and utilize research properly, please permit me to suggest:

Don Kelly (Power 106)
Jeff Wyatt (Power 106)
Steve Smith (Hot977)
Jerry Clifton
Bill Tanner

And a few select others who pioneered the dance format in the 80’s and 90’s who shamefully have been forgotten.

I'm pretty sure that Los Angeles is the only market where Guy consults MOVIN'. In that situation, Emmis paid for the rights to use the MOVIN" name but does not use Alan Burns.

A MOVIN' type format would probably work as well in Phoenix as anywhere. In the late 80s Phoenix actually had three "CHR/dance" stations as they were called at the time. The teen girls that listened to those stations, and not rock hits, are now in prime advertiser desired demos. So what station should get Movin"?

What A Maroon !!

Burns owns MOViN.

Zapoleon is only co-op involved in Emmis/L.A. - nothing more.

As far as your music "experts" to approach :

Don Kelly (Power 106) - Also consulted KKFR until 1994. C+
Jeff Wyatt (Power 106) - Ruined more stations than St. John. F
Steve Smith (Hot977) - See Don K.above. Is consulting Brentlinger Stations. C-
Jerry Clifton - Other than "Steve 103.9" in 1993 - failed miserably here 4x's. F
Bill Tanner - A true genius - but - long in the tooth for this format. No grade

Only correct choice for this format in Phoenix ?

The afore mentioned Zapoleon.

Re: What A Maroon !!

This is somewhat off the subject...

At least on Friday & Saturday nights, the playlist at Sandbar (a restaurant/bar/club near Scottsdale & Shea - it's more laid back than typical Scottsdale hangouts) sounds very much like the Movin' format...more so than any other club I'm aware of in the Valley.

haven't been to the place but ill bet its more adventurous than the stale Movin' stations are.

After all, it would have to be .. unless it is playing the same few lame trax everyone got sick of the 1st time they were aired on top 40.

There's a very good reason the Jammin Oldies phenomenon didn't catch on: it was consultant-driven and none of the stations had any creativity or drive to go beyond the "safe list."

Same with these movin' stations.

I'll bet there are people on this board right now who could conceive of and execute a music rotation that is far more compelling over the Long Term (and makes more MONEY) than these boring cookie cutter MOVIN' debacles.

Movin933.com is hinting Johnny B again.

What if the current rock thing was a hoax? After all, they DID say they were going to keep all the DJs, and then fired the AM show.

Couldn't a rock station be called "movin"?
