MOVIN' SOUTH with RICK DEES

Imagine most of you have heard/noticed that the only Country station in LA adopted MOVIN' format and will be bringing Dees back to host mornings shortly.

Emmis is a smart, programming oriented company. What are they seeing that I'm missing?

Could be the compatable sale with KPWR makes more sense than Country. KPWR is off about 25% over the past year so this could just be a way to repackage both stations into a stronger sales position.

Saw a banner ad proclaiming Movin' went to #1 in 7 weeks. Anyone have any idea what that means?

Maybe it's an effort to lower the station's demos - at the expense of losing market format exclusivity.

Many argue that Country's demo is too top-heavy - similiar to Oldies but not as severe. That's one reason why there's no country station in NYC, even though Country artists playing at Madison Square Garden (and other venues) sell out concert after concert.

Emmis is keeping KZLA on HD - but I bet it won't be long before someone else in LA exploits the format hole using a main channel signal. Even if it's a rimshot.

In the grand scheme of things, I wouldn't doubt it...

...just as long as 'Disco Duck' doesn't make the playlist...

Friend of mine suggested what I thought was VERY smart idea ... CBS should dump KLSX (Free-FM) and pick up country mantle in LA. Seems smart as an outsider ... but I ask same Q as JDW ... why would Emmis do this if they hadn't done homework first to come to conclusion it makes sense for them.

1) Apparently the LA version of Movin' is not the Alan Burns exact format. Movin 93.9 just paid for the rights to use the Movin' name.

2) So LA has no Country anymore and we have to live with two of them taking up precious dial positions. Ugggg.

I doubt that the Seattle Movin' is the exact Alan Burns format, either. It's VERY different from the original launch, in both music and image style. Far more currents, with more of a hip hop slant… and a decidedly less AC approach than the original concept.

I think we'll see a lot of clones that license the name, buy the jingles and program a format that is very UN-Movin'.

Warpfactor and theFrameGuy are right.. Same name, not original Alan Burns format, just paying for the movin' name.

"Emmis Communications and Dees Entertainment have announced the launch of a new Los Angeles radio station, Movin 93.9, effective today, Thursday August 17. Movin 93.9 represents a new format in the Los Angeles market, Rhythmic Pop Contemporary, which will feature the music of artists like Beyonce', Gwen Stefani, Usher, Jennifer Lopez, Black Eyed Peas, Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Gnarles Barkley. Movin 93.9 is "The Mix That Makes You Move." " -Forbes.com

I'm kinda sick of hearing the "music that makes you feel good", but that's just me.

Since Emmis owns Power 106 in LA, the Movin' thing does make sense.

Ironic how Rick Dees, battling Emmis in the heyday of the KIIS-Power battles, is now on the Emmis payroll.

Goes to show how you shouldn't be burning bridges in this business.

Right, Lisa Wood?
