Movin.... will it last long term?

So we have had Movin for quite some time now in the valley. They finally have a pretty full air staff, so the question is will this format stay for at least the next year or will they pull the plug? Are they competing as well as they should on paper? What more can they do with a "cookie cutter" boxed format?

When Movin' first signed on back in October of 2006, I thought it was a fresh new idea! At the time, about a month prior to Movin' signing on, Power had just been moved up the dial with a weaker signal on 98.3. I thought it was a perfect opportunity for a station like Movin' to grab some new listeners with a different format. They saw an opportunity to possibly steal some ratings from Power and even Kiss. You gotta remember, at that time, there was no 101.5 Jamz, there was no 92.7/99.3 The Beat. Let's fast forward though to November 2008, and those mentioned stations are now here. Movin' wasn't able to gather the ratings before those stations got here. Now that they are here, I think it's going to become increasingly difficult for Movin' to perform decent here in the valley. Movin' plays the same songs over and over. Their format hasn't really changed. They have tried to incorporate some more currents, but I don't think it's been very successful. They are banking right now on Ryan Seacrest bringing in the ratings. He hasn't been on that long, so we will have to give it a few more months and see if he can give them a boost. If not, I don't see Movin' lasting more than a few months into 2009.

I posted this on onother string...thought id repost it here..........

If Trumper was smart (wich he obviously isnt since he seems to like to keep MOVIN on life support) He could have taken Movin to a TRUE JAMMING OLDIES FORMAT...or if he wants to make some serious fast cash, he can beat Liberman to the punch and go the Regional Mex route...There is also the spanish pop format that can be filled not that KVVA has flipped.

104.3 is too close to Jamming Oldies for anyone else to want to do it.

a good move would be to go to an alt-based format, either AAA or alternative rock or adult alternative rock.

In the right competive environment, I think the format can have some success. Phoenix is not the right environment and people won't listen to Seacrest, just for Seacrest. They have to like the music around him too.

I think the only thing holding back Movin' is the signal. The only way to grow that format is to put it on a stick on South Mountain.

I don't see any other format outperforming Movin' on 97.5, so Trumper might as well just keep on keepin' on.

Movin' 97.5 actually has a great signal for the western part of Arizona. When I've driven to L.A., San Diego and Las Vegas, Movin' is the last remaining Phoenix station. You can even pick it up in parts of Yuma. Going to Las Vegas, you can still pick it up in Wikieup and on I-40 going to Kingman. Meanwhile, the other Phoenix stations are long gone. I take it, then, that the transmitter is located on the west side of town?

Too bad nobody lives out there there.

97.5 used to be licensed to Flagstaff. It had its COL changed to Dewey-Humboldt to let them push the signal further to the south and turn it into a Phoenix rimshot. You can't nudge it any further south. It is what it is.

Or more specifically…no one out there gets Arbitron diaries.

Looking at this map of all Arbitron markets, they don’t measure Arizona any further West of Maricopa County. So, if Movin’ has any listeners in, say, Yuma County…it does not matter.

Even if Arbitron measured Yuma county, and Movin’ showed up, it would not matter.

Arbitron does measure Yavapai & Coconino counties, but again, it's irrelevant to the station. Movin’ sells advertising based on its performance in the Phoenix market, which consists only of Maricopa County according to that map. (BTW, wasn't there discussion about Pinal County being merged into the Phoenix market as well? Is that still going to happen?)

The ability to receive this station so far away is just a quirk that comes with the location/power of its transmitter. It’s just like the AM stations that can be heard hundreds of miles away at night…the listenership in these areas doesn't help the station’s sales efforts.

Maybe blow it up and go Classic Country. KNIX has been afraid to go there with KMLE laying claim to the new country. Besides, there are a ton of disenfranchised T&W listeners who might jump on board. Play a few old, a majority of big 80's & 90's country hits and few new artists and call it a day. Aside from KSWG out of Wickenburg that airs the REAL COUNTRY format from ABC Networks out of Dallas, there might be a hole. Maybe there is chance to grab some of the upper end of the 25-54 that would sink their teeth into it.

Yee Haw!! 97~Five's signal hits Cottonwood, Prescott, Prescott Valley, Payson, North and Western Maricopa counties quite well. More ropers than dopers there, so your suggestion has merit. However the Esteemed Middle Eastern Men of the Media wonder if Trumper has the stomach to chase those $10 a spot buys?

My guess is that they are not getting much more than $10 a spot right now. Thank you for the feedback good Dr :)
