Moving back to Providence

So, after six years in La La land, I'm finally coming home in August. What big stuff has been going on that's not on this board? Let me assure you, Los Angeles radio is SO BAD that I bought XM a few months ago and have never regretted the decision. Hopefully, Providence radio is still reasonable.

It'll be nice to finally come back home....

I'd have to put my thinking cap on to compare Providence radio in 1999 to today but suffice to say it's more of a corporate market. You'll find HJY the least affected by this but there's a lack of imagination in programming the other stations in both clusters. In fact all the other stations are programmed by only two people so there's your answer. Both apparently get the job done in terms of functioning within the corporate environment but all they really do it keep the shelves stocked.Don't cancel the XM subscription and bear in mind that Boston signals are still strong in the state.

You know, I've been listening to Lite Rock 105 lately, and I'd say the station really seems "un-corporate". DJ's all day, even on the weekends (unless the tracking is exceptionally disguised) and a ton of giveaways and contests. Not to mention the programming is decent, and it doesn't seem overrun with commercials. I'm as critical as the next radio-infoer, but I think Lite 105 sounds like a station from 10 years ago.

The Providence market has nice mix of everything. Classic rock, top 40, oldies, country, hip hop etc. Whatever your taste you'll find a station to meet your needs.

Providence is good if you like sports. You've got 3 choices: 790 AM/99.7 FM The Score and 103.7 WEEI-FM are all sports around the clock. And 1320 The Drive WARL carries Sportings News Radio with some non-sports talk programming thrown in.<P ID="signature">______________

B101 has become a classic hit's station of the 60's and 70's leaning towards the Rock Hit's of the 70's ELO,Steve Miller,Bee Gees etc. with what I believe is a slow phase out of the 60's.

Bruce Palmer and Big John let go by B101 which Bruce has landed on Middays at Sister station WSRS in Worcestor. Not sure what happened to John Bina.

WHJY is now the Flagship for Evening Jox Quinn and Cantara.Simulcasting on a 2 or other stations in Northern New England.

WSNE became Star 93.3 which lasted about a week before Entercom slapped a S and D and became Coast 93.3.
David Jones gone to be replaced by Brian (?) The Pharmisist but not using the name.

WWRX as Classic rock sold to Phoenix to simulcast WFNX out of Boston then live in Providence then back to a simulcast just to go Belly-up and become WEEI-FM an almost complete simulcast of Boston's WEEI-AM with the exemption of Red SOX Baseball still carried on WPRO.

Citadel sold WAKX 102.7 in Narragansett and 100.3 which had more formats in since dropping jazz than I can count.

WHJJ cans all it's dignity and ratings to air the ANTI- American network (Air America)

Can't think of anything else.Hope that was a help to a couple of things.

One thing that Providence lacks is a full-blown, card-carrying classic rocker. Certainly 'HJY is as close as you'll get, otherwise you'll have to pull in WZLX from Boston.

Six years ago, 100.3 and 99.7 aired classic hits under the branding "Z-100". In 2000, the stations kept the Z-100 name, yet changed the format to all 80's.

As the 80's craze died, 99.7 broke off from the simulcast in late 2002 to become an FM simulcast of 790 WSKO. In March 2003, 100.3 became WKKB, a classic rock/current rock hybrid similar to 94 HJY, but targetting the New Bedford area.

Upon Citadel's sale of 100.3 (and 102.7) to Davidson Media, 100.3 flipped to a Spanish Tropical format, again targetting Providence, as Latina 100.3, in early 2005.

> WHJJ cans all it's dignity and ratings to air the ANTI-

Or simply, WHJJ becomes an Air America affiliate, keeping it's existing branding.

The only other thing I can think of is WWLI changing it's name from Lite 105 to Lite Rock 105 in either 2000 or 2001. Oh, and also Hot Talk station 550 The Buzz (WLKW, had Mancow in the morning) was sold to ABC and became Radio Disney WDDZ, while 1450 WHRC changed calls to WLKW and began simulcasting 1340 WNBH New Bedford. And of course, the never ending messes at 990 WALE and 1320 WARL.

Nice list, Kenny.

All of that music you mentioned is represented here but classic rock does not exist as a format in itself as Viking said.Classic rock is more than just the music. It's a format.Just because a station plays Magic Man does not mean it's a classic rocker. It's music and staff.HJY's lineup lends itself to a classic rock format while B101's does not.It is a missing format that would pull numbers away from both B101 and HJY with the right signal.
