Moving to town...

Hi there,

Moving to Nashville in a few months and am curious if you can give me a general view of what the radio climate is there. In addition to having a musical background, I have medium and major market experience doing everything from news, production, board op, weekends, and lots of swing shifts. I've also worked in numerous formats including Jazz/NPR, Country, CHR, News/Talk, Christian, etc...

Any help is appreciated. At this point I'm wanting to do a little homework before sending out packages. I'm really looking for part time, anything to get a foot in the door. I have a total of about 10 years experience.

Thanks for your help,
Dan

Sounds like me about 6 months ago. I moved here to Nashville with 11 years in radio and couldn't find squat full-time. I finally did find part-time work, and luckily it's with the company that I wanted to work for in the first place. My advice is, keep an eye on the job websites, including Monster and Career Builder and also e-mail all the PDs you can. Go to www.radio-locator.com, look up Nashville and visit every local radio website and ask if they have any openings, even the non-comm Christian ones (since you mentioned having experience in that format) WNAZ and WAYM might have something.

The only ones I wouldn't waste my time on are these small AM stations such as WHIN, WMRO, WAMB, etc... They are usually fully run by one or two guys and automated the rest of the time. One local AM station manager gets incredibly insulted if you call or just walk in the door and ask for a job! It didn't happen to me, but the guy actually stated that in the ad that ran a few months ago!

Good part time help is hard to find. I'd reach out to the PDs and let em know you are on the beach and available to help em out, ANY shift they might need.

With 10 years behind you, you're sure to be an answer to someone's prayer. Especially if you can get in prior to fall book.

Just don't take my job. ;)

Not sure if they have anything, but you mentioned CCM. Some contacts for ya:

The Fish: Vance Dillard
WAY-FM: Dave Senes

Also, think I recently read where NPR had a Reporter/Correspondent opening out of Nashville. http://www.npr.org/about/jobs/positions.html

Also, might wanna check out www.allaccess.com and www.radioandrecords.com for some other listings.

All the Best to ya from one beach bum to another,

:)

WAMB has several employees so it's hardly a one or two man operation. However, they don't have as high a turnover rate as some of the other stations. Best bet in the Nashville market for part-time is with the big boys--Clear Channel, Cumulus or Metro Networks, and possibly Citadel.

I think that would be WMRO.. I recall seeing that on their website or it might have been an ad for a sales position.
