MPB changes on the way

Changes begin this Tuesday

Among the changes: the 7p-5a block of classical music and Sunday repeats of Saturday NPR shows.

I'm not a classical music fan (though I will listen from time to time to relax myself), but it has to suck not being able to hear it at night anymore. The article didn't mention anything about the 10a-12p and the 1p-3p classical music block, so I'm assuming it will stay for the time being.

That's not surprising. Many NPR-affiliated stations are going that route, once the HD is installed. WKNO here in Memphis has done much the same thing -- 3 streams here, with BBC on HD3.

Odd, though. If they were only building out 4 stations for the initial HD roll-out, I wonder why they picked Bude, which is perhaps their smallest "market" station.

It stinks that we will no longer be able to hear classical on the analog broadcast but I guess now we have an excuse to buy a HD radio.

Maybe now more than 3-4 people in MS will buy one. :D

You really think there's that many in the entire state? :p

I'm not a classical fan either (a trend!) but it also stinks that they're taking off repeats of the entertainment programming. I've been listening to the Sunday shows instead of Saturday forever.

Just another reason to get the free NPR podcasts.

They haven't been any good since they went from being PRM and started calling themselves MPB. Classical stations always have a way of sounding kinda stuffy, but since William Fulton left the station has gotten really stiff and wooden sounding. The talk shows remind me of the "Delicious Dish" NPR parody on Saturday Night Live, except on MPB they are actually serious. Most of the music programming sounds like robo-jock. After every piece its the same thing "...On MPB that was... (insert composer) sonata in B and before that we had (insert composer). Coming up next hour its (composer's)third symphony followed by news and "Fresh Air" at 3:00. ZZZZZZZZ. At least the old crew would give you some background on the music or occasionally crack a joke. This is a major snooze fest now. I wish we had a decent commercial Classical station like New York, Kansas City or Dallas. But of course it will never happen, unless the soccer mom demographic starts listening to Beethovin all of a sudden.
