Mr. Belvedere back on cable

FamilyNet has added some classic tv to their lineup, including Mr. Belvedere as of Oct. 1.

Other shows on FamilyNet include some seen on Me-TV:
Mary Tyler Moore show,
Newhart,
The Bob Newhart Show

I just saw the original movie that spawned Mr. Belvedere over the weekend while doing autumn cleaning. What a classic!

The movie? Did you ever read the book? In the book Belvedere is a total jerk. It's the mother that is the protagonist and the good guy. Belvedere in the book is lazy, hates kids and an all around jerk.

I have been watching Mr. Belvedere every night for the past week and I find it just as entertaining today as I did when I watched it as a kid 25 years ago. The thing I love about old shows is seeing the clothes people wore (stonewashed jeans!) and the lack of technology. On an episode earlier this week George was writing his sports report on a typewriter and some guy was coming over to the house to pick it up. Pretty funny to see...obviously today he would have just typed it on the computer and emailed it to the newsroom.

I like seeing 80's tv for some reason, even though it's very cheesy. Also, it was common for housekeepers to be present in middle class families on TV up until the 80's.

Next on the list that I haven't seen in syndication in awhile:
Gimme A Break!
It's a Living.

Who's the Boss? was recently on Hallmark, and Kate & Allie last on RTV though now gone.

With the Hub carrying Family Ties, Wonder Years, Doogie Howser, and FamilyNet and Me-TV carrying some shows, and streaming sources, there are some outlets but it's hit or miss with these shows.

Really? She drove me nuts! I finally reached the point where would just yell
at the television "go ahead and have sex already and quit whining about it every week!"

The episode where George gets in trouble for that TV editorial about the National
Anthem is one of my all-time favorites.

I'd love to see Growing Pains again, but it seems that it never performed well through its runs on Disney Channel, ABC Family (?), and Nick at Nite (others?), and as far as I know, no DVD sets were released beyond Season 1. So I'm not holding my breath :(

Another one on my wishlist is Just the Ten of Us (the Growing Pains spinoff) but that's even less likely.

I remember Just the Ten of Us.

I think with Growing Pains and Who's the Boss - the first half was better, and the second half of the series was less watchable or near awful.

Family sitcoms lose their funny when the kids grow older typically. With Family Ties and Growing Pains, they didn't need to introduce a new kid and have the kid grow up 5 years after one season. If it wasn't for that, Ashley Johnson whose career started from Growing Pains probably wouldn't have been seen in a few series/movies afterwards, and who knows if Leonardo DiCaprio would have been discovered as soon.

Anytime Growing Pains and Who's the Boss makes it to syndication, the whole series gets aired. So the truly awful episodes of the latter years gets circulated, it ruins the experience when you turn on and it's a later episode. They need to permanently destroy some of the latter seasons to improve the overall syndication value :)

How about Valerie/ Sandy Duncan/ The Hogan Family coming back?

Totally agreed on Growing Pains. I felt that the show started began to go downhill somewhat in Season 4 (1988-89), but it still had a decent number of storylines through Season 5. Seasons 6 and 7 were just awful.

I do recall one episode in Season 6 (pretty sure it was "Not With My Carol You Don't" -- http://www.tv.com/shows/growing-pains/not-with-my-carol-you-dont-16291/) that "looked" different than every other episode. I'm not sure what the proper terminology is - maybe it had something to do with a setting on their cameras - but it reminded me more of however Family Matters/Perfect Strangers (and virtually every modern day sitcom) were recorded. The other episodes, along with most 80's sitcoms (and today, SNL, late night talk shows, The Price is Right, newscasts, etc) use(d) a style that makes them look more "live".

If anyone knows what I'm talking about, speak up :)

BTW, I stand corrected - Growing Pains Season 2 has also been released on DVD.
