It will never be requested unless it is played.

I think there is a happy medium to this debate...you can introduce deep cuts inbetween songs that get a lot of frequency...if you're worried about a non-hit track making listeners tune out...do an extensive intro (show prep comes in handy).

Pedro

...interesting playlist longleggs, but where are The Beatles, CSNY, Procol Harem, Alice Cooper etc? Classic Rock goes back prior to 1970.

Gregg-

If you haven't already, you should soon hear from an old friend.
With recent changes at your location, you and he may be able to be mutually beneficial for one another.
I suggested yesterday morning that he call you.
I'll talk to him later tonight.

I'm glad you asked him to call! ;)

I just thought the timing might be right.
Sometimes these things work out like they do for a reason.

More Alice Cooper Music? Yes....

More Alice Cooper as a DJ? Sadly... No...

Great Concept... but the show sucked...

When a "Green DJ" can pull and 6.9 share, after Replacing Alice's 0.0... it's kinda sad.

I am going to respectfully disagree. I have heard Alice's show and while he is not a great deejay, I find his conversational style a breath of fresh air. I thought he had great guests and he played a lot of deep cuts. It was nice to hear bands like Frank Zappa, etc. It was also nice to hear more than School's Out from his own catalog. Alice has put out some great new albums in recent years.

I know that his show has over 100 affliates, so it is doing well.

By the way, I saw in Radio and Records magazine that they listed six shows that seem to garner a strong audience (syndicated shows). I don't remember all of them but I know that Harddrive (which is more of a modern rock show), The Tour Bus (which is 80's hair bands with some new stuff thrown in by those artists), Rockline, and Dee Snider's House of Hair were among them. I would love an 80's show to return to Rock 92.3 and I always liked the classic rock version of Rockline.

Hey Don't get me wrong.. I think they need some more niche shows... and 80's show would be great... I'd tune in...

but look at the numbers in Jackson.. Alice didn't work there...

His last book, he had a 0.0 share... and right after him, with a fresh from college DJ the share was in the top five stations during those hours, and was nearly 7...

personal opinions aside... it didn't work.

as a former program director of mine once said "It's a radio station, not your personal juke box"

Oh I agree with you if the ratings were 0 then you would be better off doing something else. I just always liked Alice's show and he does well in some markets. But then again, I never listened to Alice in the Jackson market, I listened in another market. You never know. I heard Howard Stern never got any ratings in the Memphis market but he is huge in other places. Actually, lol, since we are talking the Coop, would like to hear more songs by him. I actually prefer him to KISS and AC/DC who get a lot more airplay. Who doesn't love Cold Ethyl lol.

Seriously, I think a niche show like an 80's show for a couple of hours on Friday or Saturday has an audience. I would also love to hear as perhaps a segment on one of the shows, playing one or two new songs by older artists and letting the caller decide if it is a keeper or not.

I am fascinated by the Jackson listener anyway. I know when I hear Gregg's shut up and rock show, I hear a lot of 80's request, a lot of deep cuts, and some bands like UFO and Uriah Heep that most of the stations now ignore. You don't hear that in Memphis radio much or many other places. I am convinced commercial radio would have better ratings if listeners didn't get so bored by having to hear "Freebird" or "Stairway" every four hours.

What about a local music show...seems like there might be a few local bands that could submit demos for consideration.

Pedro

We have a local music show called the Budweiser Music Highway. Check it out Sunday nights at 9PM. Contact Wes Henley at Highland House Production to find out how to submit your band's material for review. Other than that you should know, I have my OWN band and I DO NOT play our stuff on the air! Reasons? #1 It ain't that good! Ha! And neither is most of the local stuff out there! #2 It ain't classic rock! That's the format kids! Work with me here!

Gregg.. I did work with you there... ha ha...

Yeah You beat me to it, but I was going to plug music highway as well.. It's an Awesome show, and Ron and Wes do a great job with it..

but I would love to see Dee Snider come back,

Take care Gregg, I miss the coffee

There are limited radio rock radio stations in Jackson and a good locally produced show might work and help connect with listeners. You could regulate it to late Sunday Night (say 11pm/Midnight).

I disagree with some of the local stuff...there are some pretty good bands in the area and with Garage Band and other audio editing software, it's easier for groups to get their music together.

A local music show could lead into a nice "Battle of the Bands" promotion...which the sales team could potentially sell to advertisers.

They're just ideas. :)

Pedro

Say, Pedro.
The difficulty is in the fact that most local "Garage" bands are "Cover" bands.
I mean, how many different versions of "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Gimme Three Steps" do we want to hear on the radio?

When those bands do their thing at a local venue where you can see them and even interact with them, as well as hear them...it's great fun.

Most have little original material, and when they do, sometimes it may not quite appeal to a mass audience.
(and....sometimes...it's not that good!)

There are exceptions, of course, but most local bands are live party bands, and many do that very well.
(The Remains included)

There's just no real market for much of that, and the program Gregg referred to is the best available, really.

Again, I would disagree...I think a lot of bands play covers because they have to...however, I think many (if not most) have original material and a local platform could be beneficial to them.

Just thought it would be a great way to connect with listeners...who wouldn't like to have their song played on a local station (even at a late hour)? :)

If nothing else, promoting local shows would be a great way to build a foundation with local groups and the folks who follow them. It's all about keeping things local and doing your best to connect with the community.

I think that's great if the station's format lends itself to that. But it's also about the listener's interest as well. It's also about being a consistent form of comfort to that listener. I think we do a good job of delivering that AND supporting the local guys when we can. I know Wes Henley and Ron Haney are all about that on The Budweiser Music Highway. We're proud to air that program. So far Jasmine Cain has been one of my favorite shows. But then she's also one of my favorite peeps! Talented young lady! Oh! And her guitar player, that Rikk Legions fellow and her drummer Brian Hobaugh... They're not bad either! ha!
We also support local music on a live level as well! Local club gigs like the one we promote every Sunday afternoon at at Redbone's Grill & Bar. This gives listeners a chance to see these band perform live. It's just one of many ways we support local music in West Tennessee. I AM a musician. It would be silly for me to NOT support local music. I also buy most of my band and PA equipment locally. I'm all about the music! ;) Rock on kids!

I have heard local band shows before on radio and the problem is, while there are some good ones, there aren't enough to always justify a weekly show. I prefer perhaps once a blue moon Gregg or another deejay saying "We got sent a demo to the station from local band "so-so", I would be interested in hearing your opinions" and perhaps give it a spin.

We're already doing that very thing! On the Budweiser Music Highway, Sunday nights at 9 PM.

I got a chance to hear a little bit of that and the Wax Museum. Those are very cool shows.

Since it has been mentioned so much and I love Mr.Snider myself. What is the latest on an 80's rock show? You seem to get a lot of calls about 80's rock on your request hour.
