Mr. Jim Futrell

I don't know who on this board remembers Jim, but he taught for a lot of years at WQOX. I took radio from him in the mid-70's. The CA reports today he died (yesterday I think) at the age of 61.

I never met him in person but spoke many times on the phone. He was always helpfull when I called on them looking for candidates for wknd shifts. How many years did he teach radio at MSC?

Jim's obit said he was with MCS for 27 years. I'm guessing WQOX (FM) went on air in 74/75 time frame. I attended the "adult education" class in summer of 77'. The FM was not "new" then , but it hadn't been around very long either.

From what I remember, Jim was there from day one of the FM station. The FCC records show first renewal date of 7-18-79, so a 74-75 start-up would be real close.

Hope this helps. Radiosaur knows more about this than I do.

Jim Futrell was indeed one of a kind. I met him when he taught my son broadcasting at Craigmont in 94-96. He didn't put up with any "stuff" from my son and I was grateful for that. His most remembered work in the Memphis area will probably be all he did for American's with Disabilities, and rightfully so.
God Bless Him.

Jim Futrell was a gentleman and a true pro. He was an inspiration to every young person whose life he touched. The kind of inspiration that transcends the ordinary.Everyone who knew Jim will no doubt agree that he was one of those extraordinary individuals that you meet only once in a lifetime if you are lucky. Jim Futrell's spirit lives on in all those whose dreams he helped come true. He was an example to us all.<P ID="signature">______________

Sad

Wow, Mr. Futrell was a neat guy. I worked with him in the Adopt A School program at Craigmont. He loved the radio biz and ran a pretty tight ship over there.

Yep, you know WQOX got knocked quite a bit, but when you look back on it, they tunred out a lot of pros who made it in the business. I remember beating every Memphis station by a few days adding "MacArthur Park" when Donna Summer redid it in about '77. I remember Jim talking to one of the record guys about it. They didn't beleive it. The record comapanies wouldn't service WQOX because it was non-commercial. Jim really beleived in that station and the students who worked there. He'll be missed.

He truly was a great person. I knew his family for many years when I was a student at Craigmont. I pray for the Futrell family in their time of loss.

One man I have/will always admired and respect. Jim was one my favorite teachers. He along with Henry Nelson taught me so much with the "you can’t, is not an option, let me show you how philosophy. As an adult being a parent and having a special needs child of my own, I even gained even more respect for the man I once told...if the fire alarm is ever real, don’t worry about the elevator Futrell... we (the students) will yank you out of that chair and tote you over our shoulder, down the stairs and out the door. Mr.Futrell is now out of that chair and sprinting to see THE Father.

.......... Jim will be missed by many.
