Mr. KABC exits his namesake station

Mr. KABC (Marc Germain) has reportedly exited KABC after 10 years with the station. While his show had become less compelling over time, especially compared to his early KFI shows, it was still superior to what the other N/T stations offered in that timeslot. With KFI spaced out, KRLA and KLAA both airing the same lame show, and KTLK re-playing taped Air America shows, there is now nothing live and local and interesting now available after 10p.

If they're smart, albeit it would be on tape, they'll pick up the M-F run of Tammy Bruce.

Tonight, a number of callers during the former shift of Mr. KABC called in saying they would miss him and a couple of callers also mentioned they were sorry he could not come to contract terms with ABC.

Mr. KABC has a lot of general knowledge of Los Angeles and many other subjects but I prefer the in-your-face John & Ken and Bill Handel types. KABC will always play second fiddle to KFI unless they get more aggressive/opinionated hosts. KABC is poorly marketed.

Tammy Bruce? Lightweight.

This shift needs to be kept live and local something I wish KFI would do until at least Midnight. But if the long delayed deal with Citidel ever happens (late summer?), you know cost cutting will be deep at the former ABC stations. As contracts come due, talent better be prepared to take a cut or they'll be out.

Too bad Mark Levin has to be run from 9-10 PM. His show really messed up the schedule on KABC.
Mark Levin is too east coast in style for KABC (although I do like his views).

I do hope they don't move Kevin James up from "Red Eye Radio". That guy really sucks. He needs to go back to Oklahoma City and work as a prosector for the government again. He mentions the calls and "Red Eye Radio" more often than having any interesting content. He doesn't know how to handle callers, the few he takes, either.

They being abc disney or citadel whoever owns kabc need to keep a democrat on in that shift.I think tammy bruce is horrible.he has been subbing for laura ingram lately and i switch stations even though i do not agree with laura much she is entertaining which is more then i can say for tammy.Of all the cities i have lived in mr kac had the most original idea for a show it is a shame!!!

First it was mr whitman now mr k no more dems are at the station.I think kabc has really gone downhill over the years.I use to like kim on sundays and now there is no balance.

Good luck mr k where ever you go!!!

Tammy Bruce... The one that claims she's a liberal and a pro-choice lesbian democrat. She just sounds like a conservative host. I wonder when she'll switch parties.

They need to hire a good strong progressive female host like Christine Craft for that slot. She's presently doing afternoons at KSAC, a cesspool in Sacramento and also as a fill in at KGO in San Francisco.

LARadio is relaying a possibility today that the Dennis Miller syndicated radio show might be the choice to be carried in the 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. slot at KABC.

Would be a horrible choice. Dennis Miller is a failure. He's no radio or talk show host and needs to forget trying to be. I don't understand why Fox, Westwood One or CNBC gives/ever gave this guy a chance.

His show is going to be live from 7-10 AM Pacific Time starting the Monday (3/12) after TRS. It will, of course, originate from Los Angeles. It would not be very topical delayed 16 hours.

I could see them running an hour of his show between 11 AM and 12 Noon to fill in the gap between The Radio Factor (Bill O'Reilly) and Sean Hannity. It's such a waste to have Al Rantel do a split shift from 11-Noon live then come back and do 6-9 PM live.

Dennis Miller said last night on Fox News his show will not start until March 26. Still no word about KABC.

Kabc just needs to take there bat and ball home and call it a day. No ifs ands or buts!!!
what does that mean? and BTW...the word you're looking for is "their"...
thanks for playing

BTW anyone (who listens to KABC) notice that KABC is still playing spots voiced by Mr. KABC? Last night around 6:04 I heard one with Mr K AND his wife "Mrs Mr KABC".

What's the norm on airing spots featuring recently dismissed AT that were recorded before their departure?

You'd think it should be embarrasing for a station to do that. Why wouldn't they re-record the spots? Maybe they have to play what the sponsor paid for as the sponsor bought the spots because they were voiced by their favorite AT. You know they pay premium to have AT do the spots.

Well, who in management pays attention to these little details anymore except us? I'm an old-school very detail-oriented person and this kind of stuff drives me nuts (as my posts on other local radio "issues" attest to). I would have had all his spots redone BEFORE he was told he wasn't coming back (did anyone notice during Mr. K's last week he was crowing about his good ratings on the air?).

His spots have played during every shift. But with Eric Braverman in charge, would you expect less? This guy gives no direction to his air talent, the station as a whole and hires his friends as "talent". It's no wonder KABC can never beat KFI.

Although, I hope the long-awaited closure of the Citadel/ABC deal collapses (now scheduled not to close until Early Fall 2007), it would be good to get some "new" blood in charge of this station and heat up the talkradio competiton in L.A.. You'd think CBS would jump in with KNX but they're just as bad off if not worse.

You don't think it might also be the fact that the KABC signal is vastly inferior to that of KFI, and is noisy in many parts of the MSA, even daytime?

No, not that much. Not as much as the way it is programmed and what programming is on the station. Certainly 50kw vs. 5kw is going to hamper them a bit. But look at Mr. KABC's hourly ratings vs. KFI (Coast to Coast) in the Fall 2006 Arbitron and years in the past when KABC was a top player in this market. KABC can do much better.

Mr. KABC would make a perfect fit as a night fixture at KNX, I think.

Things are indeed shaking at KNX/KFWB.
Andy Ludlum was promoted today to KFWB's PD, meaning that David G. Hall will focus exclusively on KNX.
I think this means that KNX will become a N/T station (it already is in fact for most of the late AM and early PM hours) and could easily become more so by adding Mr. K for late evenings.
David G. Hall built a terrific news department at KFI, so I hope that if this happens he will see the logic in once again running the full network newscast at the top of the hour, and not just the first 3 minutes that currently air during daylight hours.
