As many of you may know, the U.S. is the largest music market across the globe but it is far from homogenous. Music listening and broader fandom varies significantly depending on many factors including genre and geography. For example, our recent U.S. Music 360 study found that compared to the average music listener Dance/EDM Fans spend 35% more time with music while Latin Music Fans spend 54% more dollars on music categories, and Country Fans are 21% more likely to be planning on going to live music events in the coming year¹.

A key component to understanding music fans is geography, and how these genres perform regionally across U.S. markets. Now, almost everyone streams their music online – among music listeners in the U.S. 95% use streaming services¹. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area and working in the industry, I have a passion for music and stream most genres based on my mood and time of day. Forced to choose, I’d call Rock and Hip-Hop my two favorites. Looking at our market-level consumption data, it turns out my music streaming habits are similar to the average listener across the U.S.²

Here are a few interesting insights that have come out of our local market streaming data²:
  • Cleveland Rocks. But did you know that Clevelanders, compared to to the national average, listen to a higher percentage of Country music vs Rock? And that Country pops in 174 of the 211 markets, especially smaller Midwest and Mountain markets?
  • Would you have guessed that the music fans around the Rocky mountains have a higher affinity for dance music like in Salt Lake City and Denver overindexes at the highest rate for Dance/EDM streaming vs the U.S. average?
  • And Latin’s regional listening continues with some markets having avid fans, while other markets are less engaged. Can you guess the market that has almost 7x the Latin stream rate vs. the average U.S.? With Latin’s streaming continuing to outpace all other genres year-to-date, this genre still has plently of room to grow³.
Considering that consumption can be regionally biased, looking at the different U.S. markets provides a necessary perspective and context to better understand music audiences. Whether you are looking for new outreach opportunities, planning tours and live events, or just trying to get a lay of the land for the U.S. streaming market, the regional lens is an essential one.
