MRS (Miserable Radio Stations)

The big story of the week will be the court case in Pine Bluff over the MRS Ventures stations there. Note that I changed from Medicore to Miserable when describing these stations as a nod to Larry Fuss - an old friend to several who visit these pages regularly. Fuss, now in American Somea running a station there, has a big discussion going on the Mississippi board about his former stations around the Greenville - Cleveland, MS area which are now operated by Miserable Radio Stations. You ought to go check it out. I knew that they had made a mess in Pine Bluff, but had no idea that their miserableness had spread so far and wide.

To hear the stuff going on in Cleveland-Greenville, MS, it's kind of sad. Larry Fuss operated some GREAT sounding stations there when he had them. Plenty of spots and sound-effects, jingles and what-not. There wasn't hardly a speak of dust on them.

The way Larry tells it, this Russell dude can't pay his bills down there anymore than he can pay them in P.B. Russell is probably facing complete financial collapse, and will lose all of his licenses soon. He goes so far as to urge readers to call or write the FCC about MRS. Maybe then someone will come in and clean them up.

I would check out www.pinebluffcommercial.com during the week for the latest on this continuing sorry affair.

Actually, I live in Las Vegas, land of plentiful buffets and ample hookers. Or maybe that's ample buffets and plentiful hookers.

Anyway, thanks for the kind compliments. Reminds me of something Dan O'Day said in a recent newsletter --- "There are 2 kinds of people in radio: 1) people who happen to work at radio stations; and 2) radio people." Sadly, there are so few of the second type anymore, especially among owners and GMs.

Since I live just south of Pine Bluff, I can give you another "Miserable" update. KZYP 99.3 is not only mono, but *badly* distorted with a low audio level and hum. KCLA is a dead carrier with hum, KOTN is badly undermodulated also with severe distrotion (ESPN radio). KPBQ is the only one of the "Delta 4" that sounds remotely like a properly maintained station, but even its seems to be oversplattering (main reason i've never been able to receive WB101 or any of its predicessors here).

I remember a time about 20 years ago when the then new owners of fomer KADL-FM (which is Mix 94.9 KMSX today) upon purchasing, took off the station for fear of being out of compliance with FCC regs. Seems the FCC is rather lax in some areas these days.
