Ms College "Collegian" full page article on WHJT

Oct. 26
Each year they have a huge BOOK SALE, at MC (Clinton) while there today, a headline in their college paper, that read
"W H J T.... NO LONGER LOCAL", caught my attention - it was a full page & well written by:SARAH BETH JARNAGIN.
Below are a few lines of interest:
"There will no longer be familiar voices heard on the Mississippi College radio
station, Star 93. 5 as WJNT chose to move away from local broadcasting as
of Aug 2012.
The station made the move to satellite programming ....& is now programmed out of
Nashville by a company called WAY MEDIA.
MC is one of the few universities in the nation that still has a commercial radio station.
Traci Maughon resigned as gm after 10 yrs of employment...she is now branch mgr of
jack-FM for Radio People in Jxn.
(below is from a letter to station from "a Listner"
I am not happy with the changes at all !!!!....You are now, no longer a local station!!!
ARE YOU TRYING TO TEACH COMMUNICATIONS STUDENTS ON HOW TO MESS UP A
GOOD THING!!! (end of letter and now more from the article}
...The future of the station is uncertain...we are currently in transision and trying to
put everything in place to insure that this Univ & community asset remains on the air
and in its basic format. We will soon begin the process of using this opportunity
to explore and assess the BEST OPTIONS AND DIRECTION FOR THE STATION' FUTURE"
(last quote from Doug Amacker...paper says is interim gm)

I streamed the Way FM station in Nashville during K-Love's opening in Nashville. If WHJT are thinking about this option it is no real loss to the Christian community in Jackson. Just someone else that asks for your contribution to the cause.

You have it, Michael...an educational institution does not need to be operating a commerical station.JBI

They have done this before. In the early 2000s or late 90s. Just to let everyone know..

Way FM is a decent network and - from all accounts - a pretty good company. I applied for a job with them once. Obviously I didn't get it. :)

The bottom line is that MC - like many commercial broadcasters - simply can't afford to have management for the station and thus it's best for them to put the station on the bird. Given the state of "local" radio, this seems like a natural progression. The communications students actually can learn a good lesson from this experience: This is the future of radio. Find something else to do.

The Communications Department at the University of Memphis had me sit on a jobs day panel several years back. At the time (which was well before the economic crisis from a few years back), I described how radio was a business with declining job opportunities. I advised that if anyone was interested in broadcasting, they needed to be proficient at more than one thing, because every person lucky enough to be left standing would have to take on more duties as companies acquired more stations and ran them with fewer people.

I haven't been asked back to sit on any panels.

Rob: They did not want to hear the facts...and you gave them. What word should be used? Deception,
misrepresentation...Whatever...you told the truth. And I feel sorry for those who were misled. JBI
